Less than 1 year ago I entered my first Tri to see if I liked it or not. Swim was 500 yds in the pool. I had no swimming background whatsoever. I completed the swim by doing breaststroke mostly, maybe 150 yards of freestyle.

Today, less than a year later, I was able to complete 2,000 yards continuous freestyle swim w/ ease. I may not be fast, time was 42 mins but it was easy to complete.

So to all those who struggle with the swim or are new to the sport I just want to say, stick to it & you can accomplish what you set your mind to. Just keep working at it & find a good program & the swim will soon become enjoyable. I am sure others have progressed much faster as well & can give some good advice on how to get better. Keep Tri'ing!

Congratulations to you!  You should be very proud of yourself.  BTW, this was certainly very encouraging to me.

I too did my first sprint tri doing the breastroke 12/07. I took my first freestyle lesson in 6/08 (total immersion) and just this week completed a swim around 2.4 miles continuous. It does get better, but I don't know how I could have done it without taking the quicky 2 day course. I tell you what it was well worth the $$. Speaking of swimming, next week is swim focused for me, 6 hours of swimming planned for the week 8).
