Subject: Traveling with a Bike

I saw a post on another site that got me wondering about flying with a bike.

Southwest Airlines has a size limit of 80 linear inches.

my Hardshell Serfas Iron Case is 88". In fact most of the hard shell cases on the market are greater than 80".

So what do people do? Has anyone had this problem?

And does anyone else have this case?

I'm flying to Portland for Nationals next week so this is kind of important. I had been told previously that a Hard Case would be fine. They never mentioned the 80" limit. (my fault).

They told me I could bring a bike box for $50 each way.

Have you tried calling them? You are paying extra for the bike anyway so maybe the rule doesn't apply?

Originally they (SW) had told me that I could use my hard-shell case. Then I saw the post so I called and they confirmed it is over the size limit and would not be accepted. Now I am scrambling to figure out what to do.

Define linear inches?

Sum of height. length, width?

Mine is 45 + 30 + 12 and I have never been turned down...

But if you are that worried...FedEx or DHL two day air....best option out there.

Thanks Jen. I decided to send it through Tri Bike Transport. Since the are doing the race and they don't pick up here until Sunday. Cost a little more, but saves me a lot of hassle.

Actually, the cost is about the same after you get charged for the over weight cost for your tri gear on top if the over size cost of the box. Remember Tribiketransport also allows you to send a tri bag, and I suggest that you take advantage of this. The airlines socked me with not only the over size bike charge but also the over weight limit charge, which they didn't make the fact to clear until I got to the counter and had no other choice.

Also, make sure you check the latest rates, these things are changing day by day as fuel prices go up.
