Total Time = 2h 29m 11s
Overall Rank = 43/474
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 8/55
Pre-race routine:

I woke at 4:30 and showered to wake myself up. I had coffee, PB on whole wheat, and 1 Ensure. Sipped on coffee and gatorade until race start. One hammer gel 15 minutes prior to the start.
Event warmup:

2 mile run; short swim
Swim
  • 26m 26s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I just put my head down and started swimming focusing on relaxtion and breathing. I started pushing harder after the first buoy and kept pushing the whole way. It was difficult sighting with the red swim caps and red buoys. Plus, it was foggy.

After the 1st turn buoy, my training buddy (Mike Tindol) came up beside me. He swims faster than I do; so, I decided to try and stay with him. I drafted just off of his feet for the next 1000 meters. I kept annoying him by hitting his feet. He had no idea it was me. At one point he gave me a nice breast stroke kick to try and shake me. I stopped navigating and just hung onto his feet. He led us a little off course, but nothing major.
What would you do differently?:

Sight a little more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

My HR was a little elevated after pushing the swim, so I took it a little easier in T1 than I should have.
What would you do differently?:

I really should start practicing these some day....
Bike
  • 1h 11m 32s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 21.89 mile/hr
Comments:

My quads were burning from all of the Ironman training leading into this race. I had a hard time pushing at first. My HR was good, but my muscles hurt. It got better and better as I went.
What would you do differently?:

I lost my GU pack somewhere along the way. If this were an A race, I would have rested and tapered. Pre-race massage to work out sore quads.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Not horrible, not great.
What would you do differently?:

I should practice this when I'm practicing my T1!
Run
  • 47m 27s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I just gutted it out. My run was a little slower than previous years. I think my legs were sore. Also, losing my gel on the bike hurt me energy-wise on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Ensure that I get some more nutrition toward the end of the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

As usual, stand there gasping while someone yanks a chip off of my ankle. I don't know why that annoys me so much.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of rest.

Very nice race. Strong all the way around. I saw a Strawberry Banana Gu on the ground and was going to pick it up and take it.. but decided not to waste the time it would take. Might have been yours. Heh. Great Job.

Great numbers. I, too, was annoyed at the chip 'strippers' at the end. It's like a waiter that won't leave you alone to actually eat your meal!

The kid followed me like I owed him for the weekly paper.

Really solid times on a tough course. Good job.
