Comments:

And here comes the DNF. Noticed the front wheels was sounding a bit odd on the way out of transition, but thought it was just brake rubbing. Less than a mile into the course I realized I had a flat. Pulled off and got my new toolkit and spare tube out (just picked that stuff up on Friday). Apparently the tire bead came out of the wheel on the back side, and when I put air into it, it just blew up. And that was it. Walked back until the SAG wagon gave me a ride back.
What would you do differently?:

Well, I think what happened was the rim tape wasn't completely covering 1 of the spoke holes. So I bought some new tubes on the way home and I've got the front in the living room waiting to see if it wants to pop. So far so good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Flat tires. I really should have spent more time on the new wheels before I raced on them, but since I was recovering from bronchitis I picked up after my last race (2 weeks ago) I took the last few days easy. Before next year I definitely intend to put some miles on these wheels and make sure that they are good to go. I may also change tubes as practice a few times to make sure I know what I'm doing.

Event comments:

Unless the roads get fixed before next year I will not do this race again.

Sorry about your technical difficulties.  It was great seeing you there.  Hope you have a fun weekend.  At least you and jd got some bonding time   There were two more gravelly spots by the way.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the flats. It was to be expected on that course with the gravel. I thought they had said that the gravel parts were going to be covered with some kind of carpet, but I guess not. I saw quite a few people on the side of the road with mechanical problems.

I hope you have better luck next race!
