Age Group Rank = 6/13
Pre-race routine:

Arrive on time this year. I kept making trips back and forth to the car as I kept forgetting 1 thing each time. Good thing I was parked just across the road from the transition spots. I wasn't sure what clothes I would want: It was 45deg on the drive to the race. I put 2 different jackets, full finger "cool weather" cycling gloves and arm warmers in transition. So much for decisiveness!
Event warmup:

Walk the 1/2 mile down the beach to the start in fukll wetsuit; that should suffice! I got used to the water temp; really quite comfortable. As I swam in to shore from the ocean, a breaker absolutely flooded and filled the wetsuit down the back! Gotta be aware of that for race time!

Time includes T1. I think my T1 time might be a bit slow; it seemed that way during the race. The swim itself was great. I was just catching the lead pack of ~30 and had left a large pack behind me. I got caught in no-mans land and couldn't draft.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I'm not going to ease up just to draft and like being out of the washing machine so I have clear water to myself.
Transition 1
  • 00m

No break out of T1 time. I realized the weather had warmed up and went without jacket, gloves or warmers. Good decision; I was fine. I fumbled with my bike shoes a bit and didn't clean sand off my feet. Forgot a gel, but NBD.
What would you do differently?:

Need better shoes. These Adidas are both too small and too clumsy to be using for Tri.

I had a good bike today. My computer said 20.2 for an average, so including T2 here slows that down a bit. I had one guy on a Specialized who played the "You can't pass me" game for a while, but after about 1 mile and 3 exchanges, he was gone. I passed someone I know who's always stronger than me; a more experienced triathlete. That improves my attitude. I picked up a lot of places and really hit it hard.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Today was what I want every day.
Transition 2
  • 00m

Someone racked in my spot, so I had to improvize and move down 1/2 a rack. I didn't see a towel, so I think I was safe there. Shoes again were a bit clumsy, but I got through without too much difficulty. Grabbed the number belt, a gel, sunglasses and I was off like a prom dress!
What would you do differently?:

New cycling shoes.

  • 08m 55s  min/mile

Somehow, I always end up in no-mans land and by myself. It makes it tough to go hard when no one is with you. I had a good run; my best tri run this season. Still, it's my weak suit and I need to improve on it. Better than where I was in June with >1:20min/mile faster pacing on a similar course.
What would you do differently?:

Try not to fall back so far. I'm going hard and leave nothing out there and I can't control the competition, but still, I'm killing a good effort because I'm a poor runner.
Post race
Warm down:

Sit on a rock with my head between my knees so I can grasp reality again. Clean up transition, get some food and head home. I was happy to be on the first page of results!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Other than more run training, not much.

Thanks to the volunteers who gave up their Sunday morning for my race!

Nice race and with a terrific improvement on your "weak link" over the summer dropping 1:20 m/m is sweet!

Congrats on your race..good way to finish up the tri season and move onto Cross.

Awesome race. I was there last year and loved it. How were the waves at the beach?
