Subject: Tire PSI ?
I have a P2C with the Vittoria Pro light tires and they recommend a minimum PSI of 130 and Max of 150- As a heavier rider should I be closer to 130PSI or the 150PSI? I read something recently in Triathlete mag saying that heavier riders benefit from the extra pressure in the tires. I was looking for a second opinion, I always figured a higher PSI would lead to a harsher ride, and more flats but I've been wrong before.

In my experience, I would use 115 or so.  I know that's under their "minimum", but at the lower end of their recommended range (and a relatively heavier rider myself) I had nothing but problems (read: flats).

No, lower tire pressure leads to more flats not higher (pinch flats). I pump my tires before every ride to 120 psi and almost never have flats. I to am a Clydesdale.

I ride with tires at 100-115 quite consistently.  NEVER a pinch flat.  120psi is MUCH different than 150psi.  Pressure TOO low or too high is a problem.  From what I've seen, most riders nerver flirt with too low unless they haven't pumped them up in awhile.

What is your weight, and what is the tire size?

Okay, so the Diamante Pro Light comes in 700x23. The 23 is the really important part of the equation, along with your weight, in selecting tire pressure. The wider the tire, the less pressure you can get by with because the larger air volume helps protect against pinch flats (for an extreme comparison, think of a MTB tire at 40 psi vs a very narrow road tire at 120 psi).

I'd still run yours at 120-125 psi.

Sort of related question - if you flat out on the road and have CO2 canisters with you, how do you all determine your tire pressure? Do you all bring a portable tire gauge with you, or do you guesstimate and then read it out on your pump at home? Also, how many CO2 canisters does it take to get to 120PSI?

I'm wondering, since I too just got the P2C with Vittoria Pro stock tires, and an anticipating long rides where odds of flatting will get pretty high over the training season.

For a 12g cartridge:

  • 700x23 - 94 PSI
  • 700x25 - 90 PSI
  • 650x20 - 125 PSI
  • 650x23 - 110 PSI
  • For a 16g cartridge:

  • 700x23-130 PSI
  • 700x25-120 PSI
  • 650x20- 180 PSI
  • 650x23-170 PSI

Thanks for the help, I had been running them under inflated. I was running them at 100PSI cold so figured 110-120PSI hot. Ill give them 2 more pumps and get them at 120-125PSI and see how they feel.

As for the long rides, im running the sonic wing, carring a fairly heavy load for training, 2 tubes, multitool, levers wrapped w/ duct tape,co2 and if needed I can tape a tire to the bottom of the wing.
