Subject: Newbie run training question
So, I've discovered I love running. I'm being careful not to ramp up too quickly, and am currently preparing for a 5K. I'd like to do a half-marathon in April.

The running program I'm doing wants us to do 4 runs/week to prepare for the 5K, but they are doing only interval training. I don't think that's the best long-term strategy for me. So, I'm doing 1 interval, 1 hill repeat and 1 long, slow (for me) run.

What should my fourth run be? Another long, slow?

My suggestion:

Drop the intervals completely; they aren't necessary right now.  Change that day to a medium run, but run it a little harder than easy.  Same thing for the fourth run, but run it easier.

The hill repeats....eh.  Just run a hilly course, no need to do repeats right now, either.

The intervals and hill repeats are great, but they are more race-specific.  If you like going harder, run harder.  Don't kill yourself, but one day a week, run at a medium effort.

You're going to see greater long-term gains by increasing total weekly volume right now, and not worrying about higher intensity stuff.

I'm not a coach and every time I try to go train on my own I end up overtraining and hurting myself.

Have you looked at the training plans on the site for 5K, 10K, half mary, full mary? The 5K ones are free but there are also the other ones available here for higher membership levels and I'm sure there are more than a few elsewhere as well.

As I said, I end up hurting myself and have found it's a lot faster to ramp up if I follow someone else's training plan

I would drop the interval and hill runs and do 3 or 4 shorter medium speed runs and one long slow run per week at least till after your 5k. You need more base running before the interval and hill runs. Later this winter try to find a half marathon plan to follow that fits your planned race date.

I looked at a couple of the half-mary plans, but it's still seven months away. (I wanted to know the starting long run distance to see if it was doable - it is.) I will follow a plan when it gets a little closer.
