Pre-race routine:

met Nicole and Maria and loaded up car, drove ~1 hr and 40 minutes to race site, drove through a few heavy rain storms but we were hoping for clear weather, got to the race site with plenty of time, being a small local race it didn't start until 11am which was great for us
Event warmup:

none really, had pre race meeting, walked by car and picked up wetsuit on the way to the beach, just before the Olympic wave started there was a bit of lightening and the rain started up and pretty much rained the whole race
  • 12m 16s
  • 700 meters
  • 01m 45s / 100 meters

there were a few lightening strikes while the Oly distance swimmers were in the water, some of the sprint racers decided not to go, after conferring with my runner I decided to go as it looked like the weather was moving off to the north, i started out going way too far right to the first buoy, lost my chance for good drafting, small wave size made for pretty easy swimming
What would you do differently?:

site the first buoy better and stay with the guy that I wanted to draft off
Transition 1
  • 03m 23s

atleast 1/4 mile run back up the road to transition area, I decided to go barefoot because it was pouring and thought the flip flops would not be a good idea, got to Maria and sent her off to bike in the rain
What would you do differently?:

put running shoes by the beach so I could run up the road faster
  • 50m 10s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.94 mile/hr

this was Maria's part of the race; she's been sick so has not been on her bike much and has never biked in the rain, she started slow and gradually increased her speed, managed to catch and pass one of the relay girls, she had a great ride in tough conditions
Transition 2
  • 00m

no real T2 time, Maria was off the bike and Nicole was off running probably within 10 to 20 seconds
  • 26m 16s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 07m 30s  min/mile

Nicole was the star of our team, she took off running and held a steady pace the whole way; even without having a warm up she ran at a great pace and passed atleast one of the other relay teams
Post race
Warm down:

hung out at the post race party trying to stay out of the rain, we were really happy to get 2nd place in the relay division since they put all the teams together, the team that beat us was a mixed team, after the race there is a local band and plenty of food and drink

Event comments:

this is a great little race up an the eastern shore of VA; the race director has it in his yard and it is low key and very fun, I think this was the worst weather day they ever had. this was my 2nd year doing this race and we will go back again next year

Yay!  Sounds fun and you guys kicked butt!  I like running in the rain, but the biking in the rain would have freaked me out.  Glad Maria is tough.
