Yay, just finished my first him off the couch 1 year roughly. It was the Las Vegas HIM and as you can guess it was HOT. It was forcast to max at like 96, but it actually got to 105. 105 it turns out is significantly hotter than 96. Anyway RR up if ya want to look.

I just wanted to thank folks for all the info to get me to this point so quickly.

Question, for folks who do 104.6, are HIM's still tough or is it like not that hard? Because that HIM with constant hills on the bike and 105 on the run with the first 5 miles uphill and not enough aid stations was um tough.

Kind of thinking of what it would take to double that distance. ...

I am fine today and could workout and all but, yesterday was a bit long.

Congrats on finishing the half.   I was done the Olympic by 10 and sitting in the lake recovering thinking how tough you guys were having it on the half!   Just the hike back over to the RV park with the family and equipment in tow was brutal later on.

Congrats!  I was on the same schedule as you.  PLUS, your race was in my neck of the woods!  That's tough course for sure.

Anyway, I did another HIM the following spring (this last april) and I'm doing a full IM this fall at the same venue.

What I've heard, is that an IM is not simply "twice as hard" as an HIM.  It takes significantly more effort to do an IM compared to an HIM.  But I'll know more in 6 weeks!

Maybe someone who has done both lengths can speak first hand.

Congratulations!!! Quick question for you.  You said you were coming off the couch, did you have any athletic background (swimming, biking, or running) before hand or did you truly start from nothing at all?

They are different animals.

I did a HIM yesterday and an IM 3 weeks ago. I am more sore today than I was after the IM. I think the difference is in speed. During a 140.6 event, you pace yourself appropriately, keeping your effort more in a endurance level (ie zone 2).

During the HIM, you will probably be pacing yourself faster, ie putting out for effort, so to me, it felt harder.

My IM felt easier than my HIM.

Why?
I was better trained & prepared for my IM, tapered better.

Build to HIM was screwed up as I was in a bike crash so I had some funky injury issues and built up quickly on the run which hurt my bike.

I recall after I finished my HIM I had already paid and registered for IMLP and wondered what the heck had I gotten myself into and how could I do it..but I did.

To answer Iwantotri, I have waterskiied (a lot), played raquetball, did a year of track in high school, along with some wrestling and football, played in the water (read breastroke), done some snow skiing, windsurfed now and again, had stilts, pogo stick, unicycle, ice skates, etc, you know fun stuff, but no base in s b r.

I had probably 100 miles on the bike, maybe 10 miles swimming and a total of 100 miles run from birth to age 39. So um basically off the couch, but with some agility from random sports and a decent stubborn streak er um pererverence.

I am basicaily still kicking around whether to shoot for a 2009 end of year IM or hold off until 2010. I am sure others have been here.

Dang, I hope this is the case.  I always felt horrible after my HIM's and I would think to myself, "if I feel this bad, how on earth could I do an IM", but I signed up anyway.
