This may seem like a really stupid question, but how do you keep your hair from getting soaked in the pool? I bought a speedo bathing cap meant for long hair, and no success. Some days I run to the pool at lunch to get my laps in and I don't have time to dry my hair.

I have long hair and have that problem too.  I just wrap my hair up tight in a bun and wear two swim caps.  I pull one down far in the back and the other cap more towards the front. That really helps with me keeping my hair mostly dry.

The double cap does help. Pull the first down low over your ears before slipping on the second. You can also try a home made swim band with a more watertight cap on the outside. I use this and it works great especially when time is tight its about 95 % dry for me.

See this page about a home made swim band and swim cap

Cut off some of that hair!

Seriously, once your training increases you'll be glad it's shorter because it'll always be wet otherwise. I have longish hair too (and a frizzy mess on top of it) and keep it just around shoulder-length. That way it's long enough to tie back or make a braided ponytail (which is much easier to deal with during a race) but not too long to handle.

A fast way to put swim caps on once the hair is tied back: Flip the cap inside out, fill it with water, set it on top of your head and let go. The weight of the water will slip it tightly over your head. It takes a few times to get the spot right where to set the cap but then you'll never do it another way. The silicone ones work much better since they don't pull on the hair.

Several years ago, I had really short hair and loved the convenience (no swim cap needed) but I hate to spend the time and money on getting a trim every 8 weeks...

I don't think swim caps are really meant to keep your hair dry, they are mean to keep your hair out of your face.

I just tie my hair up in a bun before I put the cap on. It seems to work to keep my hair out of my face.

I don't think caps keep your hair dry. They might if you had a really, really tight cap- but that might be a little uncomfortable.
