Subject: Tri too soon??

Hey all,

I am new to the boards, introduced a couple weeks ago, and had some great response from a few of you.  I have a goal of finishing a sprint tri before my big 4-0 in March.  I don't see any scheduled around that time yet (plus I'm thinking water is REALLY cold), so I am considering the Blue Water Tri in Parker next month.  I have been working out consistently for about 5 months, dropped about 30 lbs, but only really started "tri training" about 4 weeks ago.  I have always been real athletic and have been up and down in my shape/condition over the years.  I have looked at the training programs for the sprint races, and I seem to train quite a bit more than that already.  I swim 1000 to 1600 followed by an immediate spin class on Mondays and Wednesdays; I either do 45+ min on elliptical at a "variety" pace to change it up, and/or run 2+ miles in addition to lifting; I have a long swim with different pace and sprint training on Fridays; and I just got a bike yesterday so I can start Saturday morning rides.  I feel like I am progressing well and feel strong during all my training.  My concern is that...I feel really good/strong, but I am concerned that I am rushing into a race and may be biting off too much too soon.

I would really appreciate any advise from any of you race veterans.  Thanks All

Scott

Hey Scott!

Sounds like you'll have no problem finishing a sprint next month. Just a FYI, but there are a couple other races in the Valley in November as well that you could do if going to Parker isn't convenient (Although I don't know where you live, so Parker may be better for you).

Have fun and you'll do great!

Thanks for the encouragement.  I live in east Mesa, but my in-laws are in Havasu, so we are out there a lot.  Plus, from the BT race reports, it sounds like it is a little less crowded, which I am hoping will calm the first 100 of the swim beating I have read about at races like Tempe Town Lake.

I did the Blue Water sprint tri last year and had a blast.  It is a fun, low key race and is perfect for a first time race.

Scott,

There are still several smaller races this year. For instance there is a reverse TRi on Thanksgiving day in Goodyear. And there is another race on December 6th in Anthem. Plus of course the Bluewater tri.

As far as racing too soon...Not to worry. My first tri I weighed 280lbs and it was 109 degrees during the race. I actually finished the race and learned a ton.

I don't think that you will have near the problems that I had and you will surely finish allot better than I did.

Good luck and don't worry, just race.

If you're looking for a starter sprint tri, I think that Tri-Family racing puts on a pretty good event to get acclimated to triathlon.  They host the Goodyear one that was mentioned, but they have historically done some in Feb and MArch if you want to wait until 09.

Goodyear and Anthem would be good choices so you won't have to travel overnight (or need a wetsuit)

Find a sprint and sign up. You sound ready. If not, let us know so that someone can be there with a video camera to catch the hillarity.

Seriously, a pool sprint would be great, and there should be a bunch around. Let us know how we can help.

Thanks for the support.  And if my wife brings a video camera I will make the comic relief avialable.

How do you find out about all of the others?  I don't see any of them listed in Races on this site.   I was just looking at those as my options.  I'd love to know where I can find a list of other options.

Here are some more.

I thought there was one up north that Excel And Beyond (aka the Bolens) did, but can't find it. I thought it had something odd like a 40m pool.

Edit: Ha! Found it.

dude I started training 2 months before my first tri. I was 312 when I did and it. I finished and I wasn't last.

Go for it. I say set a goal register for a Tri and go at it guns blazing. It works for me. I pay for a race and then I will do what ever I have to do not to waste my money.

Good Luck.
