Overall Rank = 813/1929
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 149/313
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 415 and mixed drinks while eating (3 Ensure 1 banana one more banana pre race and a jell 10 till race start. Got to the parking lot at 515 and to the race course at 525. Good setup in trans and walk around for my "warm-up"
Swim
  • 27m 40s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. Thought it might be a little short due to my time. Sounds like it was200 ish short. Got to the inside (left) and stayed there. Tight on bouys and turns. Washing machine for first third then again last 300.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. gambled w/new goggles (first swim w/them) and won. Could have been a different story if they has not worked.
Transition 1
  • 03m 29s
Comments:

Good T1. Handed cap and goggles to Rebekah on run in. The run up to the racks was long. I walked most of it to get hr down. Very dusty area. Put socks on and walked/jogged to mount line then on the way. I thought this was slow but it was top third for my division (93/313)
What would you do differently?:

Took a lot of time but I planned for long transitions at this venue due to the size.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 41s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.80 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike crs. Some turns caught me off guard. Fed on the route 1.8 bottles of perpetum 1 jell and 4 endurolites along with more water than I can begin to count (3-4 bottles). Stopped at the 3d water stop for the toilet. That stop cost me at least 15 positions on the bike leg! For a guy riding a road bike w/a tri setup and new fit 3 weeks prior along with limited training I will take the result.
What would you do differently?:

Consistant early riding vice going as hard as I did. Still have trouble letting others influence my race.
Transition 2
  • 04m 22s
Comments:

Poor T2. The dismount line caught me totally by surprise. I barely got velcro off, and right foot out of shoe before I came to a complete stop at the line. Tired legs. Walked 90% to my rack and started to clean up and re sock shoe. Need to improve if I am going to compete at this distance. (231/313) Did stop for the toilet again..... Probably 60 spots lost in T2
What would you do differently?:

Gotta know where the choke points on the race are so I can be prepared to get off the bike and into T2 better. Train with longer bike to run bricks w/T2 practice to prep the legs!
Run
  • 2h 17m 22s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Training at JM really gave me confidence on the trails. OK run. average pace is close to 10.5 min. Slow but not bad for going as hard on the bike early. Several times I was ready to be done, then I would fuel and feel better to the next lull. Feed when ever you can keep it down.
What would you do differently?:

Know the hill profile and train for it. More long bike to run bricks so I know I can do it!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for 10 and then started feeling bad!!! Sat on a cooler for 5-10 then needed to lie down for a while (25+ min). The body was done!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First 70.3 and still carrying extra weight on the body, not as much as 6 months ago. Get under 170/165 and see how things progress.

Event comments:

I call the course hard only because of the terain and "my ability". that does not mean it was bad. Great race!
