Bribie Island Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

View Member's Race Log
Bribie Island, QLD
Australia
The Run Inn
28C / 82F
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 44s
Overall Rank = 189/268
Age Group = M30-35
Age Group Rank = 28/38
Pre-race routine:

I arrived fairly early as this was the first time to Bribie Island and didn't know how long it would take to drive there. I ate a protein bar about half an hour before race start. Checked out all the entry and exits points and racked my bike. All the bike racks were numbered which was great!! no jostling for space.
Event warmup:

I went for a small swim to warm up but really that was about it. Not real keen to waste my limited energy supply.
Swim
  • 12m 3s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was in a river inlet so there was a very strong current pulling us along the course. I think my fast time was due more to the current rather then my swimming ability. I tried to use what I have learnt in my TI training drills about "pushing your buoy" which raised my legs, reducing my drag and allowed me to really make good use of the current. I also tried to copy the pro's who swam further out from the beach, into what I think was the strongest part of the current.
What would you do differently?:

My goggles leaked a bit so I need to tighten my straps.
Work on breathing from both sides as there was a fair amount of chop on the water.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 went well. Found my bike, not that there was many left by the time I got out of the water (we were the last wave to start). I used some elastic bands to hold my shoes level on my bike and this enabled me to run and jump straight onto my bike, this worked a treat!! no more stopping to flick my shoe around.
What would you do differently?:

It all went well
Bike
  • 39m 12s
  • 20 kms
  • 30.61 km/hr
Comments:

As always my bike is the slowest part of my race. Soooooo.... many people passed me. I was happy with my overall km/h given it takes into account both transitions time as well. I had a gel on the last lap which I am sure gave me an energy boost in my run.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to train more and spend more hours in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Got out of my shoes and racked my bike without incident. Remembered to take off my helmet this time.
What would you do differently?:

it all went well
Run
  • 24m 29s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 54s  min/km
Comments:

Really enjoyed the run, felt like I had a lot of energy. Passed a few guys who had passed me on the bike, that always feels good. Was able to sprint towards the end a fair way out from the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

not so much differently more what I would do again and that is to definitely have another gel while on the bike course before my run leg. Also I have started to train over longer distances for the run which i think is helping as well.
Post race
Warm down:

I was too busy trying to find my training buddy and forgot to warm down. Managed to drink some water and have some watermelon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I went as fast as I could today and with more training I'll be able to go faster.

Event comments:

This was my best race to date without a doubt. The strong current helped my swim time but to run under 5 minute KM's for the 5km run course is by far my fastest time ever. I put this down to training over longer distances (8 and 10km runs) and taking the gel on the last lap of the bike ride. My next race is in 3 weeks and I can't wait to go around again.

The photo below is of me and one of my training buddies Karen after the race.

You had a great race! Brilliant work.
Good to see you remembered to take your helmet off before running too ;-)

Its interesting to hear to say that training over the longer distances has really helped you,
I think I'll be incorporating some of that action in my training plan.

Good to hear you're pumped for the next one!!
