Well it finally happened. Last Sunday 45 miles into a 60 mile ride a small dog about 18" high ran out in front of me. I was in aero position and went to reach for my brake then before I knew it I T-boned the dog and I went over the handle bars and was bouncing across the pavement.

Results: Bruised ribs, road rash from my forearm to my back, deep cuts on my forearm and shoulder. My right shoulder is bruised along with both knees. One deep gash at the bottom of my left knee and more road rash above it.

Bike: Dent in the top tube where the handle bars swung around and hit it. I didn't notice the dent until I got home and unloaded my bike about 3 hours later.

The guy that owned the dog was outside when it happened, he helped me wash all the blood off and I cleaned myself up as much as I could then finished the ride home.

So no training for at least a week. Thank goodness tri season is over.

OUCH!!!  What happened to the dog?  Did the owner apologize for not controlling his dog?  Glad to hear that you are relatively OK (at least since your season was already over....)

Damn dogs. I swear to you I was an animal lover until I got a bike. Now, I'm squirrel-phobic. I'm not sure this triathlon thing is leading to personal improvement!

Heal quickly--and make up a better story to explain the scars. The ladies won't be impressed by an 18" dog. Better go with rabid wolf.

I have farm dogs run next to me and chase me on almost every long ride.  It is just a matter of time before this happens to me.  I get so angery that these dogs are not contained!!  Sending you healing vibes!!

All I can say is be careful. I never would have thought that a dog could cause me to go over the handle bars. The cuts and scrapes are healing fast thanks to neosproin, but the bruised knees, shoulder, and ribs are still sore!

Feel better soon.  I will never understand why people don't tie their dogs up. Yell  And I am a dog owner.

Same thing happened to me 2 weeks before the Chicago Accenture. I train on mostly farm roads southwest of Chicago and a farm dog thought I was a playtoy. Luckily the dog and I were both OK and the dog owners paid for my bike to get fixed. Good luck on your recovery!!

Just posted a thread Sunday about it happening to me. Luckily I didn't fall, but ran right over it with both wheels and really scared me. I feel for you and a speedy recovery!

Sorry, I didn't take any pictures. This was my first serious crash, and it was a good one. I will start training this week for the Mardi Gras Marathon in New Orleans. This should give me a good run base for Ironman New Orleans in April.

I am not sure what happened to the dog. It yelped really loud and ran back across the street and under the house that it came from. I was at the owners house for about 15 minutes cleaning the wounds and the dog never came back out. He said he was going to whip the dog and I told him that would not be necessary, I think I hurt it enough.

Don't beat the dog, beat the owner. I only road to work one time this summer because I did not want to deal with the farm dogs on my route. Had a close call with them last summer so this time I grabbed my water bottle and sprayed the first dog to come at me. It was enough to make him stop just long enough for the dog behind him to slam right into him. This gave me time to get away.

If I try again next summer I'll carry mace or my hand gun.

Glad to hear you're doing well now.
