Subject: Your opinions on clothing to buy?

I am totally confused about what type of clothing and gear I need to be looking at to get started on the right foot.  I have all my biking gear and bike specific clothing, but am totally unfamiliar with the swim and running gear.  I live in Alabama, so weather is not that big of a factor.

I don't want to break the bank, but am wondering what most of you train and race in.  Do you prefer tri suits or shorts?  Do you bike and run in the same gear?  There is so much out there, I would just like some experienced feedback as to where to start looking.

Thanks in advance!

I've found this site to be a decent place to buy swimming gear, very reasonable prices.

I bought a couple pairs of lycra jammers to swim in, they're working great.  If they would just make me faster....

In some respects, it's a sad reflection on the sport that someone who is new to it all feels inundated and overwhelmed by gear choices - it really does reflect and speak to how we sometimes all can fall into dependence on the newest/fastest/lightest stuff out there.

Don't turn a fun past time into rocket science;

for training, swim in whatever you're comfortable in, whether it's jammers or a speedo. Just keep in mind that pool chlorine will eat clothes, but proper care will extend their lives. Therefore, you'll see few people swimming in a chlorinated pool with expensive tri shorts or tri suits (unless it's for a pre-race practice to test your clothing in a real-world situation).

Same with running - run in whatever you're comfortable in, whether it's baggy gym shorts ala Lance or compression shorts (my choice, to keep thigh chafe to a minimum) or specific running shorts. Same for tops - moisture wicking tops trump cotton.

Reserve tri shorts, tops and tri suits for racing, or for doing a few training sessions pre-race to test out the clothing. Tri stuff can be expensive and I "save" my good stuff for racing. If I'm doing a longer run brick session I'll wear tri shorts for comfort on the bike but still easier to run in than cycling shorts.

Tri-specific clothing is great for races because of it's moisture wicking, fits snugly and the fact that the padding in the short won't hold water so you'll be more comfy on the bike & run. However, for sprint tris, many don't bother with padding on the shorts and swim/bike/run in running shorts and a T shirt.

I race in one piece or two piece tri suits. I usually train in my normal cycle clothing, normal swimsuit jammers and normal running clothes.

I will train some in the tri suits, near race day, to make sure they still fit the same, and no seams are rubbing the wrong places.

Two piece tri suits let you use the restroom more easily. Having to peel a 1 piece off your shoulders and take it down to knee level is not fun in a porta potty.

On the other hand the top on two piece suits tend to ride up from your waist to your rib cage, when you are running, if you have any sort of belly at all. We call them belly shirts, since they ride up and the whole world gets to see your bouncing belly from the hips to the ribs while you run. You can pull the shirt down, and 5 steps later it will be back up to your lower ribs.

Also on a two piece, when you cycle, the top can ride up a bit in the back giving you a gap of an inch or two from your shorts to your shirt. Many of us have gotten a half moon shaped sun burn on the back in that gap area.

If you have a flat belly, this doesnt happen.

The tri suit has a much thinner pad than cycling shorts, and the tri suit dries pretty quickly when you get out of the water. Swimming in cycling shorts and then biking or running feels like you have a wet diaper on.

Thanks for the feedback.  And thanks for the warning about the belly...lol  Hoping to lose most of that over the next month or two...
