I just wanted to recommend this park for any new or beginning mountain bikers.  I was looking for something different yesterday and found this park on a Maryland biking map I have, so thought I'd give it a try.  It's in  Burtonsville/Laurel just east of Route 29, straddling the Montgomery County & Prince George's County lines.  There's a great 8-ft wide paved trail that winds throughout the park that is crisscrossed by mountain bike trails, making it impossible to get lost or too far from where you parked.  It's mostly single track with no big hills at all and no big obstacles.  An experienced mountain biker would probably be very bored here, but if you're a beginner or not into extreme mountain biking, it's perfect.

There's a website with a link to a map here:  http://www.pgparks.com/places/parks/fairland.html.  But, it doesn't show the mountain biking trails at all and only a small portion of the paved trail.  If anybody ever wants to meet out there for some easy biking, let me know.  I'd love to go again.

The majority of the natural surface trails are on Montgomery County side of Fairland.  Here is the link: http://www.mcparkandplanning.org/parks/ppsd/parktrails/trails_MAPS/trailmap_pdfs/fairland_plan.pdf

I kinda discovered it accidentally, but Fairland also has a really nice aquatic center where I do almost all my pool swims. Something like $15 a month, not bad at all.

Montgomery County has a GREAT park and recreation department.  There are a lot of county pools - very nice pools, indoors and out - that are v. cheap !

(now that I live in Baltimore, I pay $80/ month to go to a gym w a pool )

Make sure you thank M.O.R.E (http://www.more-mtb.org/  and Austin, who worked with the county to blaze most of the trails) for keeping these single track accessable.  The park has been threatened with development more than once.

I agree, M.O.R.E is an awesome group. If you mountain bike, or enjoy using local trails, consider joining the group
