Subject: Illinois Marathon

My husband and I are attempting the 2009 Illinois Marathon in Champaign. U of I is his alma mater, so it will be meaningful for his very first marathon. This will be my second attempt (actually, third, but I dropped out of training for San Fran at the 15 miler).

I'm thinking of forming an informal e-training group and starting a blog for team motivation and support. For those in the immediate area, I'll probably be designing and posting the long group runs.

Is anyone else interested in joining in? I welcome anyone who thinks they could benefit from group support!

bulldog520, we are following the Novice 2 program from Hal Higdon. Google it to view. It starts with a 6 mile long run, has three short runs during the week, and 1 20 miler.

Jenni,

Looks good although 6 is too long for me at this point but I can modify it a little.  Thanks!

Well you got time but I would build up to 6 miles sooner than later.  The more miles you can build now the easier training will be.   You need to be able to do 6 miles when you are 20 weeks out.  I would try to get used to running 8 miles on a lsd if I was you.

I gotta agree with Chirunner134 here. The first week of training starts with the 6 miler on Dec. 6th. I'm starting early as well because I'm coming off an injury with eight weeks off running. My plan is to start with a 3 miler on Nov 15th, then add a mile a week to the long run. Barring any further injury, I should be ready to do the 6 miler on the 6th. You could try something like that, depending on where you are right now.

I'm planning to run the Illinois Marathon, and my wife may be doing the 1/2 (she's battling some injury issues, so not sure if she'll make it or not).

This will be my 2nd marathon, I just did Chicago (slowly), so now I'm looking to actually improve.  I'm planning to use the FIRST marathon plan so I don't have to give up cycling like I did for Chicago.

I'd be interested in an e-training group, and could possibly make it to Springfield for a long run once in awhile.  I'm in Swansea, about 90 miles from Springfield (I do some work there, so I've made the I55 drive WAY too much).

That's great Matt_d! I looked at your plan and it seems your longs will be very similar in length to ours. I'll try to post long run routes several days prior like on Wednesdays so people can plan. If we get a good local group going, we'll have coordinated water stops.

It will be tricky if we have lots of snow and ice. Springfield doesn't have tons of running trails and the ones we have aren't cleared in the winter. I'm thinking about getting some of those "yak tracks" that slip on over your shoes for traction. Anyone use these for running?

January will be the worst. By February, it's more mud than anything.

Jenni, Don't mean to jump in but I think Bulldog is only planning on doing a half-marathon. If thats the case Bulldog you would only start off with a long run of 4-6 miles and max out with a long run of 10-12 miles depending if you are doing the beginner or intermediate program. Steve

Oops, your right Steve1128. And his training wouldn't start as soon as the marathoners. But our etraining support group includes half-ers, too, so the more the merrier!

How long are the 1/2 training plans, about 12 weeks? They should start around mid-January or so. I know it will be hard for me to get my behind out the door in January!!

Sorry, I meant 6 miles right now is too much.  I am only doing the 1/2 in April but will be building up to at least 13 before I do the race.
