Would I get anything out of entering a sprint tri without "training" for the swim and run parts,

Hi--I am a newbie too, but If you don't have open-water swimming experience, please practice that aspect a few times before you race.  The OWS is a whole different ballgame.  Unless, of course, your prior swimming experience involved backstroking through a feeding frenzy, then you're OK.  Welcome, and good luck.

Sure, you can do a sprint tri without training if you are in relatively good shape (consult your doctor before you do, though!) and you can swim, bike and run.   It would be better if you did train a bit, especially the transition part by doing bricks!  As for "catching the bug" ... that is highly likely!

What is the "bug" about doing a tri that keeps people coming back for more?

For me: accomplishing something really hard, overcoming obstacles, transforming yourself, reintegrating healthy athletic competition into my life, etc.
