Subject: The other two wheels... The odyssey is almost over. (incredibly long -- you've been warned)

Or is it really almost begun?

So here's the story.

I've always wanted to ride a motorcycle. But I've always been surrounded by people that made me feel like an idiot for wanting to ride... Parents, first and second exes (the first, being a nurse, called them "donor-cycles". So a while back, my wife brings up the topic of wanting to ride a motorcycle... I'm thrilled. She's shocked, because, like me, all the people around her always made her feel like an idiot for wanting to ride.

So we decide we're going to take the plunge. Look into the MSF courses, the gear, the bikes... I decided that, since SHE brought it up first, that she'll be in the class first, and get geared up first, and get the bike first. So then she gets on this hunt... Which bike? Which helmet? Which jacket?

She's got her heart set on a Harley. I'm looking at the family finances and cringing. No way. But then the idea of "pre-owned" comes up. Hope restored. But she's adamant about getting one from a dealer and not a private party ("people lie" -- what, like used CAR salesmen don't?). So we find one, we take an afternoon to go look. She decides that the vibration is going to play he!! with her arthritis, so then the hunt starts anew... Which bike?

She decided on the Suzuki C50. They've only been made since 2005, so the used market is pretty bleak. We find one, and go look (last Saturday). A LOT of miles on it. But there's a new one that they'll make a good deal on. We talk... We look at the numbers... They offer zero down financing with a killer APR. Okay, we're good to go, and they deliver it for free. See the pic below of Donna on her shiny new Suzuki C50...

Oh, and she's already signed up for the MSF course in December (4, 6, and 7).

So all along I've been researching, checking craigslist, checking the classifieds of PNWRiders (about the equivalent of the SlowTwitch classifieds). And on Saturday, pretty much ALL of the bikes that I've been looking at dried up. Nothing for 3 days. It's okay, because she was going to get going in all this first. Besides, I wouldn't be able to insure the bike until 30 days before my MSF course, which I wasn't even signed up for...

So on Tuesday, Donna asks when I'm going to sign up for the class. "Don't know." SHe says I can practice on her C50 (I DO NOT want a cruiser...).  So I check. There's openings December 1-3 in Tacoma (closer to home). So I check with Donna... "Go ahead."

So then I'm signed up to take the MSF course three days before her...

And then last night, I'm cruising craigslist... The perfect bike shows up. I respond... And today I picked up the exact bike I was looking for, at a great price (see picture below).

Then I get back home, and Donna is reading through the DMV booklet to take the "riding permit" test. Mind you, with taking the MSF course, we don't really have to take the test at the DMV, but if we get the permits, we can practice on the local low-traffic roads and parking lots legally (not that a little detail like that stops most people). She cajoles me into going down to the DOL office to take the test with her.

So we go. Take a number. Wait. And wait. AND WAIT! Finally we get to take the test. She doesn't pass... But I do (but it's the wrong test -- it's the regular driving written test, I should HOPE I pass it). So I have to start over and take the right test. I pass. So now I'm permitted.

So with just over a month to go before out MSF classes, we've bought two motorcycles in one week (I have the gear except boots, but my hiking boots will work for the time being, she's got the boots and helmet, but needs everything else).

Who said triathlon was expensive?

So is the odyssey almost over, or has it barely begun?

DUDE! THE bike that came to my mind when I started reading your thread was the SV650! Glad you got the S, I just don't like how the pared down bike looks.

And really, motorcycles are a lot like cars nowadays, as far as longevity. Especially the foreign ones. I worked with a guy who bought a bike that he thought had 80,000 miles [odo only had 5 digits]. After he spun the thing once [180,000 miles at this point] he got to talking with the guy he bought it from and turns out it already had 180,000 miles, so he had 280,000 miles on the same engine with no modifications! This was on a Honda from the 1970s. So really, mileage isn't a HUGE factor [obviously if you can get something with fewer miles it would be preferable, since there are fewer miles for someone to potentially beat the crap out of it] when shopping for a bike.

Anyway, that's awesome! I keep telling my wife we're going to get another bike soon [have been without for 1.5 years now - sold my CBR600F3 to buy bikes for myself and the wife]. I keep telling myself the same thing, but in reality it's not gonna happen for a while.

Awesome! I just got the bug myself. Started with my little Yamaha XT225 to learn on. My next bike is in my avatar. Suzuki V-Strom 650. Very great all around bike. I'm not much into the 'harley' bikes, but love motorcycles.

If you are a smart rider, you should be fine. Accidents happens with cars/motorcycles/bicycles etc. Just be safe, ALWAYS wear your gear and keep 3 eyes on the road (and never trust people in cars!).

I was down to the SV650S, the Ninja 650, or the Yamaha FZ6. The bike I bought already had the Heli Bars installed for a more relaxed position, so it was absolutely perfect (not so thrilled with the flush-mount fender eliminator kit -- the turn signals are kind of hard to see during the daylight). And it only has 4100 miles on it (a 2005).

The hole in the safe will need patching on a regular basis.  I've had about 7 or 8 bikes over the years, the last one being a $17,000 Goldwing.  Then to justify owning the world's most comfy touring bike, we decide to spend my entire 4 week vacation doing a 9,000 mile trip around the country.  New England, west to Arizona, Colorado, Utah, South Dakota, ad infinitum, you get the picture.  Stay in a new motel each night, meals on the road, entry to tourist spots, souvenirs (like the 10 lb stuffed buffalo...yeah, don't even ask) of which each has to be mailed home cuz there's no room on the bike, gas, other miscellaneous expenses.

Freddy the Freeloader could afford to do triathlons compared to this.

HAWT bike! I want a sport bike someday, but I just can't justify it living in northern New England. Too many other things to spend money on right now. Maybe, once I'm debt free...

Hawt, hawt bike...

Enjoy the new bikes!  Should be a blast.  I love the SV650s, it's one of the bikes I recommend to a lot of people.  I've unfortunately just sold my bike, but I love motorcycling...eventually I'll have another one, I'll just make sure I can afford it the next time.  But I had this one for three fun years.

yay!!  Another motorcyclist - I'm local to Seattle (Everett actually) and ride almost year round.  I also race the doggone things at Pacific Raceways, Portland, and Spokane.  See www.pappawheelies.com - needs work and a lot of updating (and there's noise on the front page that I keep meaning to take off!)  I've been riding and racing for just about 5 years now (I went from MSF to Novice race school immediately - no, I'm not sane).
Welcome to the madness!!

Welcome to another addiction! I got into tris to get in better shape for roadracing. Then I had to stop roadracing as we moved into a fixxer upper home. Still have all the bikes, ranging from sport bikes to cruisers to vintage racers to vintage dirt bikes.

When it comes to motorized transport, I have no "speed" itch left to scratch. I got the sporty more because I just felt a lot more comfortable in that position. Every time I got on a cruiser with the forward controls, I was having to search for the pegs. I got on ONE harley that had "rear" controls, and it was surprising comfy (it was an '05 something or other, and only had the rearward controls THAT year... and for $12K, I could just admire it from afar).

I'll enjoy the ride, but the track stuff I'll leave for the supremely insane...

I would have suggested those first two bikes for both you and your wife. I think you made a smart choice. I have spend thousands of dollars on motorcycles (mostly racing) and triathlon is affordable to paupers by comparison.

Looks like you got a good deal on a nice looking bike.

Good luck and stay safe.

Here is my one of my street bikes, a Triumph Daytona.

Welcome to another "addiction"! I've been riding since 2001. My first bike was a 96 Harley Sportster. In December of 01, I bought a 2002 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic..which I'm still riding today. I turned 50,000 miles back in July on a trip up to Northern Wisconsin/UP. I have to admit, though...since being bitten by the triathlon bug earlier this year, I haven't put nearly as many miles on my Harley as I normally do. I used to average about 8-10k miles a year, but this year I've only put on about 2k...which is very sad, because I MISS riding SO much! Training took up so much of my free time this summer...free time that would normally be spent logging miles on my Harley. There just wasn't enough hours in the day, and days in the week to swim, bike, run, AND ride my Harley. I also used to take week-long road trips...which were the highlight of my summers. I've been all over the country on my motorcycle...and trust me, there is NO BETTER WAY to travel and see our great country, than on a motorcycle. Congrats on taking the leap into a whole new world. Riding a motorcycle is SO much fun! Ride safe, ride smart!
