dude that totally sucks - sorry to hear it.

My wife tore her ACL the summer before she was supposed to head to college to play soccer on scholarship. She had her choice of grafting some of her hamstring to replace the ACL or to have a graft from a cadaver. She opted for the hamstring and has regretted it ever since. She hasn't had any more problems with her ACL but her hamstring now gives her trouble every once in a while.

Hope your recovery takes half the time they project and you're back at it soon!

Take care of yourself.  There's always volunteering at races.

I'm very sorry to hear about this Kristen.  Take care of yourself.  Perhaps it's an opportunity to branch out into something else for a while.  Rest it well!

That's rough!!

But I'll point you to the door that just opened:

You can take up a sport that has always interested you but you never had the guts to do. Sure, the knee limits this gutsiness... (you can't take up pole vaulting), but what about kayaking or canoeing? When you get closer to your recovery, you could try skiing, cross country skiing etc.

Maybe now would be a GREAT time to get your scuba diving license.

Just a thought.

Good luck with it. I hope you get good treatment and heal quickly.

1 year ago today, I had an achilles reconstruction. The doc told me it would be a year before I would be recovered. I did a sprint in June and a full race shedule from that day on. I have regained all the fitness I had lost. My 2008 times are back where my 2007 ones were. He told me at my 6month visit that he'd not had a patient recover so well and so quickly.

Point is: It's always darkest before the storm. It may go smashingly well and I hope it does.

Hang in there. I know it's not the same thing but I did the full extent of what my ortho would let me do when I broke my collarbone. Every single workout to the max of what I was allowed to do (which meant for 6 weeks I did all my swim workouts with one arm!) and then I was able to do IM WI 12 weeks post break. It's amazing what you can do when you really pay attention to your body and do exactly what the doctors tell you.

Edited to add: my ortho also could not believe how fast I healed from the break. but then again, he hasn't has too many triathletes break their collarbones in the middle of a season, so his vantage point doesn't include the type A anal athletes that we all are...

If your 2009 season is shot, maybe this is a good opportunity to volunteer at races, or even be a swim buddy at an open water event. You will most likely get your bike fitness back faster. Then maybe you can do aquabikes? Or maybe even a full tri, but walk the run portion? Maybe make 2009 about participation and less about competition?

Good luck. You've got a long road ahead of you!
