I tore my hamstring last winter. I stepped off a curb while running and felt it go. I had about 2 months of PT. You really need to take it slow, it is very agitating but still is true. My doctor allowed me to swim but advised to have little to no kick, and definately no kicking drills. It takes a while to heal and can be easily re-injured. Probably not what you wanted to hear but just giving you a heads up.

Some gyms have "bicycle" machines where you only use your arms. But only one gym I belonged to ever had one of those.

I hurt my foot and hope to begin swimming soon. (I want to make sure I can get to and from the locker room without falling and killing myself first.)

Definitely swim with a pull buoy and band around the ankles.
Good Luck and speedy recovery.

X2... I hurt my knee last year and I used this machine at my gym for 2 months.  It isnt the same as a good cardio work out but it helped me keep a bit of my conditioning.

doubleplay - 2008-11-06 2:20 PM Definitely swim with a pull buoy and band around the ankles. Good Luck and speedy recovery.

I have a hamstring issue on one leg and ITB issue on the other.  The hamstring is not pulled like yours though.

Anyway, I am swimming while these heal.  I am able to do a little kicking since it does not activate either problem area much.

I too would use a pull bouy and a old tied up tire around the ankles.

If you have gloves and heavybag, you could box. I don't care how in-shape you are, it will tear you up! It's a good workout and a lot of fun too.

There are stationary hand cycling machines.  I used one at a physical therapist when I was trying to rehabilitate some nerve damage.  It is a lot less cardio exercise than a leg power because the arm muscles are so much smaller and much less conditioned for aerobic exercise.

Funny you should mention this, I just started doing this with a friend of mine (he is into ultimate fighting). Let me tell you, we do two minute rounds with 30 secs rest starting with the heavy bag then going on to focus mitts for a total of 1 hour and I am totally wiped out at the end.
