Pre-race routine:

plans were to be in des moines the day before. two sick little girls decided to nixt those plans and we headed down to des moines the morning of. a little bad weather slowed us down, so the pre-race warm up consisted of getting on the costume and walking to the start.
Event warmup:

the "warm up" consisted of jumping into the crowd of 7000 people and thrive off body heat.

bbbrrrrr. the boss and i were content in our prom outfits to stay towards the back. the gun went off and we watched the first half shuffle off. we began to walk for a bit, super duper crowded. there were several spots in the "race" where we had to stop and wait for people.

this wasn't so much a race as it was a jog around the campus. the crossings were always fun, but there were so many people with zero sense of urgency that you had to wait forever.

that water was really, really cold. the first crossing the boss and i misjudged the depth and almost fell in after the ground came up too fast. guess i'll have to retake my lifeguard training.

i almost got the boss to run down the length of the stream to the other side, but we did not, maybe if it was warmer.

since we were running in close contention for 5000th place, the hills and sides of the crossings were super slick with mud. this provided entertainment as drunk participants seem to ignore ropes and tried to go up it alone. i was almost trampled by a human avalanche.

the costumes were pretty good this year. lots of near naked people, well, not people, men. thankfully, i did not follow any of them up a steep hill.

about the second crossing is where my legs went numb. they warmed up after a while, but every time i hit water after that they would revert to no feeling again.

started to snow towards the end. time to wrap it up and leave. grabbed a doughnut and a cookie and ran back to the car to thaw.
What would you do differently?:

if i wanted to rock and roll, start towards the front of the pack.

Warm down:

ha ha, warm down, that's funny.
