Subject: Wetsuit Purchase? Southern Ontario?

Okay - so the last piece of equipment I'll need for next year is a wetsuit ... I've managed to get through my sprint-tri career without.  I'm a really decent swimmer and well I just figured it would be a pain in the butt.... but I'm looking at Steelhead next year ...

So where do you recommend for looking/buying suits?

It sounds like you are in the southwest, so the nearest place for you to find good selection and prices is the Detroit area. I bough my last wetsuit at Bikesport in Dearborn and I'm usually please with the selection and prices there. It's easy to get to if you go up I-90 and then its right on Michigan. Try on everything in the store that is close to your size as there is quite a bit of variation between brands and models.

I did Steelhead the last 3 years and it is a good choice for a first half as long as the Lake cooperates. Last year it was like glass the day before the race and then rough enough on race morning that they turned it into a duathlon. I enjoy Steelhead although the community support is a little lacking compared to races like Muskoka, and it is a big race so you can expect lots of traffic on the bike.

I agree with Dave, Bikesport is worth at least one visit. FYI for parking, go behind Chelli's Chili bar and drive past the valet and you will find the back door to bikesport. I parked on the street the first time and you have to walk all the way around the block to get to the door. Watch for training workouts with the Essex county tri club(very informal) and come join us.

I can make it from my house near sandpoint beach in Windsor to Bikesport in under an hour. It is less than 60miles round trip. Take 94 to the michigan ave exit and it is only 5 minutes down the road. Chelli turns the puck over too much, but he has good beer on tap at the chili bar next door.

Bikesport tends to have pretty good sales this time of year, and they also have a very informative website:

As Tim said it's pretty quick to get to, although with all the construction near the bridge right now you have to pay close attention to follow the detours to I-94.

Hi, just wanted to say, I am originally from Windsor... or just outside... went to Essex high for 3 years and massey for 2 (grade 13 back then).  In Ottawa now.  I am going to be getting a wet suit so I can start open water swimming as early as reasonable but have know knowledge of them, any recommendations?

I bought mine at Reynolds Cycle in London last year. They usually go on sale for about 35% off about this time to clear out last year's inventory.
