Comments:

earlier in the week I thought I'd just race 1 loop for some speed work - but then decided to make it a long training day. then I thought I'd take it out comfortable and pick it up each loop.

Well, I took it out fast, was at the 2k in 4min (good for this course and my conditioning), then kept z3 for the final two laps. wasn't terribly excited about going the distance but at the end of each lap I mindlessly made the turn to start the following lap - thus committing myself.

This was a fun race. It was a Road Runners Club of American Championship Event (12K XC for Colorado). Kinda cool. The course was tough and my legs told me so. I felt like a slug out there and really tried to be concious of my form - felt like I was running on my heals and planting my feet in front of my rather than underneath me.
What would you do differently?:

stick to my original plan and build each lap rather than just holding on to a 8min/mi pace for the last two laps

in the end, it was a good training day.

Event comments:

great CMRA event. Very challenging course though, but great XC venue. I look forward to runnin there again - I'll be better prepared

Way to take the Age Group win on a day when you didn't want to go the distance. I totally understand what you mean about holding on!! Good seeing you today!

Great job winning your AG!  I know what what you mean about feeling like "planting your feet in front of you".  Seems like I always feel like that anymore.  Feel I've gotten lazy as I've gotten older.  Anyway, way to hang in there for all 3 laps...turned out to work out well for you!

Awesome work!  X-country is great but as you mention, very challenging!

Nice first lap and despite your claim of poor condition, pretty solid second and third for a x-country race.
