Subject: 70.3 Races Near Detroit MI?

Hey All!

I'm looking at my options for a HIM this summer. I'm thinking Steelhead is my best bet and had planned on that one - but there's definitely some negative press about the race. I'm wondering if there are other options for August? Timberman is quite a ways away from where I am...

June/July is too early for me...

imo, the negative press about Steelhead is way, way overblown. I did it last year, and despite the cancelled swim, thought it was worth the trip. good luck.

There are (2) in Ohio during that timeframe - check the race area on BT - I am thinking about Deer Creek in September - I think Buckeye Challenge is in August (prob 2:30 hour drive). Tawas Bay in MI is in mid-September as well which I am also contemplating.

Check out http://www.hfpracing.com/ for the Ohio events, they should have at least a few to choose from. Tawas HIM is in Sept and sounds like a decent event and in a nice area of the state.

there's an HIM in Monroe Michigan in early June called Racing for Recovery. It is a nice flat course, great run around a lake with lots of shade and the swim is in Lake Erie. Two years ago the weather was great but last year it was terribly windy on the bike and 95 degrees on the run. Hope this helps.

I signed up for the Tawas Bay HIM, even though it's a 3D race I have heard good things about it from last year.
The people I know that did Steelhead last year said that it's a good race but wont do it again. To much money, did not get any good swag and getting in and out of the place was a PITA.

If your set on it being a 70.3, you're bound for Steelhead. And I agree with Jim...the negative press is WAAAY overblown, mostly because there were a couple very vocal BT'ers who didn't have an optimal experience. It'll be a good, solid, 70.3 race, well organized, large, and a tad expensive. But it's also at a great location, and perfect if you/family/friends want to make it a long weekend....it's right on the lake, with miles of sandy beach.

If you're open to iron distance races, I'd recommend any of the HFP races in Ohio; they're a quality race production company. One other race that's worth considering is the Muncie Endurathon; I've heard really great things about this race, but it may be a bit too early.

Lastly, there's a race that I know nothing about - the Breakwater tri in Petoskey. It seems to fit your criteria (Aug 30, still in state, HIM distance), but the race production company is new to me, and I'm not sure I know anyone that's done that race.

You may also consider the Muncie Endurathon - Mid Indiana. I have not run it before but plan on participating this year. Have heard great things about it from training partners and plenty of race reports. Also happens to be the longest running HIM.
