Subject: Average 2.5 showers A DAY
I'm use to maybe 2 showers a day (3 times a week), but I just recently started training for IMC and I'm taking upwards of 3 showers a day. There has got to be some issues for the body when trying to clean it that many times a day. Anybody have issues with this?

- should I use non-anti-bacterial soap
- dry skin?

Thanks

First, take everything in your house (except first aid items) that's labeled "Anti-bacterial" and throw it out.   These products are believed to be a major source of drug resistant infections (MRSA).

Second, I, too, take a few showers a day, but I mostly only rinse off, no soap.

Thanks for the anti anti-bacterial statement!  That was going to be the very first thing I said as well.

I love my Dr Bronner's soap.  I use the bar soap, but also have the liquid soap to use as a body wash.

I don't have a problem with dry skin except then I go swimming a lot.  A little natural oil will help that, though.

When I was going to the gym twice a day, I got really good at taking <2 minute showers.   Really... I knew I was going to just get sweaty again later, and take another shower, so I just considered it a chance to get the big chunks of sweat off.

Agree on the anti-bacterial.   Most of them have a chemical called Triclosan which is a suspected carcinogen.

Body hair absorbs water like a sponge (though not as much), so it helps to get soaked in the shower before jumping in the pool, that way your hair will absorb fresh water instead of chlorine. You won't have to scrub as hard to get the chlorine smell off.

If you are having trouble with dry skin, I would suggest just rinsing the sweat off in the shower between workouts, and try to limit soap to once a day.

Ditto on the above.  I often just rinse quickly, or use soap only 'where it counts' to avoid being offensive.  Only for my final shower of the day do I lather up.

And if you're worried about dry skin, make sure the showers are not hot. Hot water will kill the proteins and oils in your skin and dry it out much faster. Keep 'em short and relatively cool.

Also, mild soaps labeled "for sensitive skin" are usually good at keeping dry skin at bay. And if you're really worried, you can moisturize immediately following the shower (lightly pat your body with a towel until you're partially dry) to lock in extra water.
