Subject: Need pedals

I'm thinking about finally getting rid of my cages and getting real pedals.  But I'm nervous. I'm a klutzy biker as it is so the clipless make me nervous.  Are there any that are better for a beginner?  I've had a few people give me different ideas, but they're all different.  The bike shop suggested Look, a freind suggested egg beaters, and someone else suggested Shimano.

Any suggestions here?

Thank you!

And I'll throw in Speedplay.  You have float and a nice wide cleat to work with, dual sided entry so you don't have to worry about flipping the pedal over to clip in, tons of cornering clearance and light weight.

Can't go wrong with them imho.

I've tried the Shimanos and the Speedplays. I think that the Speedplays are easier to adjust to.

I vote for Speedplays.  I love the float and dual sided entry.

Thanks everyone!  One person told me not to get Speedplay because of the big cleat on the shoe?  Does that matter?  I can't imagine I'll be walking very far in them.  I like the idea of dual sided entry - I'm the kind of person that stresses out just getting my foot into my cages!

We ride with Shimano. I would skip getting mountain bike cleats/pedals.

My daughter got clipless pedals when she was 11 and all the bike experts and stores we talked to agreeed the Shimano are the easiest pedals with big platform to learn.

The more people that reply to yor post, the more different answers you're going to get, making your decision even harder

I didn't like SPDs or Speedplays, but love my Crank Brother's Quattro road pedals - double sided with 4 points of entry making very easy to clip in/out without looking, low stack height, good cornering clearance, NO maintenance/lubing and the cleats will not clog with debris like Speedplays. Depnding on your budget you can go with cheaper/heavier stainless/chromo or pricier/lighter Ti and they come in quite a few colour combos if you're into having everything match.

I have had Speedplays and now I ride Look Keos.  The Speedplays are easier to clip into, especially in the beginning, and the Looks will orient themselves so you can clip in from the top without having to "flip" the pedal like you have to do with cages.  Though I like the Looks better for other reasons, I still think the Speedplays are easier to engage.

The "big cleat" actually gives you more pedal contact surface area which simply means that your power transfer will be better and you will not get the "hot spots" that other pedal manufacturers often end up with (points on your feet that get irritated by the cleat location).

Thanks again.  Now I am thoroughly confused!    Maybe I'll go to the bike shop and see if I can try some of these out before I decide.  I didn't want to have to do that though because my cousin works in a bike shop and was going to get them for me.  I don't want to be the jerk that trys them at the store and then buys somewhere else.

pseudo hijack... for the speedplays, isn't the clip in/out the same motion as look and SPD?

I learned how to ride on Shimano "Look" style w/ zero float, currently have look anatomic carbons (10 yrs old) and SPD on my MTB and just ordered a set of Keo carbons. What I have seen is they in/out is essentially the same. keep in mind that your bike/foot/shoe/kleat is differant than mine. So is your opinion of what feels good. you may want to ask your LBS to let you try some configurations on the trainer so you don't have to worry about falling.

One other thing I have learned is there are no absolutes when it comes to gear and training asking opinions about broad topics is like starting a relegious debate.  I find part of the fun in all of it is doing the homework. So just know no matter your choice there will be nay sayers and yay sayers. Do your homework and try everything that you can and make an educated decision there are no bad suggestions on pedal/kleat combos.

pseudo hijack... for the speedplays, isn't the clip in/out the same motion as look and SPD?  Sorta.  For the release, yes, an outward twist of your foot and they unclip.  For the engagement, they are somewhat similar, the difference being that with the Looks, you have to "hook" the front part of the cleat, then step down to engage the rear.  With the Speedplays, you can just stomp down on the pedal and they will engage.  You are absolutely correct in gathering info.  Most all of us, including me are laymen when it comes to this stuff and we talk from personal experience and through our views.(paradigm).  I, being the analytical type have found that I can usually make a good decision when I have listened to much counsel.

Below is from the best of gear poll.  I have Speedplay's but have Friends that ride Look's.  They're all good pedals and you won't go wrong either way.  You'll probably adjust pretty quick and wonder why you didn't switch earlier.  The real trick is to get that first tip over out of the way when nobody's looking

I have the Look Keo's. They are my first pair, and was worried about them being hard to get used to, but after one day, all is good. It was between the Looks, and Speedplays. I had heard that some people feels that the Speedplays but alot of pressure on one small area, and the Looks distribute the weight more evenly over a larger surface. But all that is personal preferance...
