“Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter. ” Sen. Tom Daschle, Congressional Record, May 7, 1998, p. S4507.

We have 2 major Cabinet level appointments who did not pay taxes in the 100's of thousands and not a peep from the Senate Leaders.  Both of them were advised by their advisers and employers of the violation.

We have a Secretary of State who's family has accepted 10's (maybe 100's) of millions of dollars into 2 different slush funds that the family controls and 10's of millions in direct payments to the woman's husband from foreign leaders, business owners and in some cases sovereign states.  Not a word from the Senate Leaders.

Obama promised change and we are getting it.  The conflict of interest he is willing to promote is staggering.

Next we will have Unions who have paid 400 million to elect Obama and the Democrats get a series of bills specifically designed by them to unionize the public and private workforce.  Not to mention all the Union officials who now have jobs managing the organization they used to work for.

Change alright.  Hold on, there is more on the way.

Well put - these are crimes that were committed.  You think any of us can get away with an ooops, I forgot!!  The fact that the media isn't hammering away on Obama to whithdraw the nomination is amazing in itself.  More insight into the definition of the "change" we have bought into.

Not defending the tax issue/problem/etc, but yes..if any of us had forgotten/not put this in then we would get the opportunity to pay for the problem with penalty.  Just like anybody else that gets audited and caught.

So in short, yes, we can get away with an oops.

I agree with this. People make mistakes on their taxes all the time. Even decent Americans like Joe the Plumber. Seriously though, people muck up their taxes all the time. They pay what they owe, they pay interest and they pay a penalty. Then they get on with their lives. If anyone wants to hold our elected officials to a higher standard fine (I do), but lets at least be honest with eachother. Lets do like unions do and bargain in good faith.

Yep.  I got "caught" this year.  Owing on some investments that I either lost the documents or forgot to include when I filed.  4 years ago.  AND I have someone that does my taxes for me.  It happens.

Not giving an excuse, just saying, it happens.

Daschle didn't pay taxes: mild concern (how does this relate to his ability to manage healthcare).
Distraction this causes: moderate concern.
History of working on behalf of the insurance industry: major concern.

One of Bush's great failings was putting industry folks in charge of regulating the industries they had worked for, which begot such Orwellian bits of legislature like the "Clear Skies" initiative.  I am not happy at all to see Obama potentially making the same mistake.  Glad to hear Daschle is gone.

I would agree.

Tom Daschle has withdrawn his candidacy for Health and Human Services. I'm glad to see that. It's understandable when one of your cabinet members has had tax issues. It's quite another when you have multiple people having problems with it.

can you just even imagine if Cheney had this in his past?

I think a lot of people would be happy if that was all he had.

And considering he won't release any information from his past or present, we'll never know for sure.
