Everyone knows that a single malt scotch served neat is the greatest alcoholic drink ever created. But not all scotches are equal. Question: what is the best tasting 12 year single malt scotch? It can be from any region in Scotland. My vote goes to The Macallan for its complex palate and savory sherry finish.

Balvenie Doublewood. Aged in oak then in preconditioned sherry casks: Total cask time is 12 years. Nothing else like it.

Macallan gets my vote as well.

Highland Park is a close second.

Glenrothes is right with the first two, but I don't think it is worth the extra cost.

Auchentoshan is an interesting alternative, fruity citris overtones in contrast to the other carmally smoothness.

I honestly can't drink Talisker, but I know it is a favorite of many.

ETA: I can't spell it either ;p

I have limited experience with single malt scotch, but I am fairly fond of Glenmorangie.

I will resist the urge to hijack the thread into a whiskey (yes I used an "e" reverie.

Nothing wrong with that.

I plan to try some of this:  http://www.stranahans.com/index.php?q=home when I have the opportunity.

x2 for Macallan ... my personal fave. Although I also enjoy a good Laphroig every now and then (with a wee bit of water, of course) ...

Well that does it Phil, you are so not invited to my scotch tasting festival now.

That said, you are SO invited to my Edward Fortyhands festival now! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Fortyhands

I know my limit and prolly would still have one taped to my hand when I woke up, and then finding my eyebrows shaved, my hair colored, and Cool Whip or shaving cream applied on unmentionable areas from you guys.

Give me a Glenlivet 15yr French Oak Reserve any day of the week, but...

For 12yr, the Balvenie DoubleWood is tough to beat.  Getting ideas now about tonight, my bottle is already open...

Balvenie. I thought the 12 year was better than the 20.

20+ year old scotch only tastes better if someone else is picking up the tab.

Seriously though, the price difference when you start to get past 12 year can be daunting.

Talisker, closely followed by Ardberg (the older one, not the 10 year old, before their malt smoking house got burnt down, not sure how old that is but it is gorgeous).  I like my whisky peaty and smokey.  I pay less for single malts here in Australia than I did when I lived in Scotland because there's less tax, crazy.

Gonna break my own parameter here and throw out here that I'd probably take a double of Lagavulin over every other scotch, regardless of age or region. Yes, it's a mighty stand, but such is the nature of this islay.

And like Wingsfan correctly pointed out, it tastes even better when someone else is picking up the tab.

For 12yrs, I too am a big fan of Balvenie & Macallan. But I somewhat recently discovered Aberlour and have begun enjoying this too ~
