Subject: Footwear for swim?

Hi,

I am new to all this and am working towards my first tri in June. I am starting to look into the gear I will need but haven't read anything on swim footwear. Do people go barefoot? wear booties? something else?

 Thanks for the help

Always barefoot.  I don't think I have ever seen anyone wear anything and am not entirely sure anything is legal??

Some tris with outdoor swims, particularly if cold, will allow neoprene booties (but that's it). They're quite difficult to swim in--you're probably better off barefoot.

Unless you're the guy at IMFL this year.  But that didn't work out so well for his race, or career for that matter.  Fins during the swim, although helpful, are not a "good" choice.  =)

I was wondering about that. I'm doing one, maybe two cold water swims this season, like 60 degrees. I am a cold wuss. At what point are the neoprene booties worth it?

I was wondering about this too and if anyone has gotten cut coming out of the water on a rocky beach.  I generally have sensitive feet and could just imagine slicing my foot open on a rock or shell.

I wear booties for winter surfing and after having experienced quite a few swims to retrieve my board, I would say "never", unless the water is ridiculously cold (unfortunately they're a necessity in NJ in the winter).

Every pair I've ever had tend to fill with water, no matter how snugly they fit, and they are a you-know-what to take off when wet - so I can't see them being much fun in transition.
