Hey ladies!  I am not racing this one (won't be ready...and am not envying you all with the temps lately...that water will not be warm!)  But I will probably be going to it to watch (I've heard that referred to as jockstrapping) - never been to one and figured I should go!  I will probably be bringing my camera so if you tell me your race #'s I can keep an eye out for you...then I can send pics...

At last year's race, the water temp was 77 degrees...but the race was also a week later...if I recall, it was on June 22nd last year.   I would keep calling Centennial Beach throughout the week for updates...somebody there has got to have info on the water temp.   I do recall last year, there were a few women wearing wetsuits (I did not)...but given the temps lately, if I were doing it this year (I'm not officially signed up yet...might do a last minute sign-up if there is space still available) I'd be wearing my wetsuit.

I just got an email update for the Naperville Women's Tri, and it does look like they are suggesting wetsuits for the race next Sunday.  The email said that the water temp is in the mid-60's, but with cool temps and rain forecasted for the coming week, they do suggest wearing one.   They also said that wetsuit rentals will be available at the expo on Saturday.

I am in major freakout mode about this...trying to scurry to find a wetsuit this week and at least get one swim in it before the race.

The Runner's Edge and Fleet Feet both rent wet suits.

Did my first open water swim in Pleasant Prarie, WI yesterday. Water was cold. Was glad I had the full wetsuit. Looking like I'm going to be happy to have it in Naperville next weekend. However, I will say that when I first got in my hand and feet were real cold - but then I started to do the breast stroke (couldn't make myself put face in cold water yet) -- did that for about 1 length of the swim lane and then I was fine to start my crawl. My only problem was I was getting pain in one ear -- wondering if that was from the cold water temperature. Thinking I may want to find an ear plug if cold water is causing it.

Yes...definitely wear ear plugs in a cold water swim!  I like the Mack's brand.  They help tremendously in cold water situations.  I was having issues with dizziness, headaches, shaking...and the earplugs certainly did help with that.  I actually wear earplugs for ALL of my swims now...regardless of water temp.

Well, the long range weather report for Sunday looks good....which scares me because if it looks good now it will probably be completely different by next week.

Would it be crazy not to wear a wetsuit?  This is my first triathlon and I'm nervous enough about the swim without adding other unknowns into it, like wearing a wetsuit for the first time!

I am thinking about going without a wetsuit but using a neoprene cap and ear plugs.  This is my first ever tri and I have never worn a wetsuit either.  I dont think I can get to a store where they rent them this week!  I live too far away.  I swam at CB last Sat 5/30 at about 1 PM in just a swim suit, regular cap, and no ear plugs.  I swam 1100 yards.  It was cold.  I know it was above 65 though.  I got a headache from it.

I swam 1000 yards in a 67 degree pool this past weekend.  Swam in my tri suit regular cap no ear plugs.  My head felt fuzzy and a little numb.

I share the fear of dealing with another new thing that day.

Will they let you wear a neoprene cap instead of the wave caps they provide?  I am so nervous about this swim!

You can wear both caps, the neoprene under the tri cap.

This is my first tri too and I have a lot of people coming to see me race. I was assigned into the 35-39 age group according to the "confirm your entry" section on the website.

Did anyone here race in this age group last year and about what time did you start? Or do you have any other tips I should give people who come to observe the race and cheer me on? I've never even done a 5k so I'm clueless about where people should stand, if they can see me swim/bike and run, or if they should just find one spot and stay there.

My hubby found that it was best to stay within walking/jogging distance of the transition area in order to see me in each segment.  But once I left T2 for the run, he did walk over to the finish line area so he could see me cross it.   Since I have run 5k's before, he already knew what time to expect me to cross the finish line.  He even managed to snap a few photos & video of me crossing the finish line.

Good luck to everyone on Sunday!!!

ETA - I was in the 40-44 AG last year, and I believe I went off at about 8:30...BUT, the race was delayed by an hour due to lightning last year.  If the race starts on time, the elites will go off first at 7am, followed by age groups starting with oldest first...then the relay teams went off last.   At least that is how they did it last year.

By the way...all of this information and ANY other questions you may have, can and will be answered during the info talks at the expo on Saturday.  If this is your first race, I highly recommend attending one of these talks.

I have only done one super sprint and my family also did the hang near transition thing so that they could see me at three different points.

I went to Centennial Beach for a swim this past Sunday to see how it would be.  The water temp was 68 and I had NO wet suit and about hyperventilated.  It was so cold I could only take shallow breaths which wasn't helping my swimming.  I am getting some kind of wet suit, either I will buy a cheap shorty (which isn't even meant for tri's) or I will rent a real tri one.  This is my first Tri so I am nervous, but I am happy to know they are suggesting wet suits.  I'm doing it for fun and to finish... so the more comfy I am the better.

Hey,

My first tri too and I didn't want to use a wetsuit but I think it's inevitable.  So the next question is....what is the best method of getting it on and getting it off?  I've heard about "body glide".  Does that stuff work?  Where should you put it?

Any helpful hints at transition?

Do you just wear you swim suit under and then throw some shorts on for the bike and run?  This is really messing up my plan for attire.  Darn Chicago weather!!!!

Hey Ladies...I have done this race in the past, and I was reading these entries and was going to say, if you're not a really strong swimmer, that water is going to shock you...it's cold, and yes, our weather really sucks!

As far as easing on the wetsuit, you can use body glide, but the other options are Pam cooking spray, which I use, and they make another spray that they will sell at Tri's stores if you don't want to use that (the wetsuit manufacturerers frown upon using Pam because they say it makes the material of the wetsuit deteriorate faster, but my sister and I use it all the time, and the wetsuit is 6 years old, so I still use it...)

Bodyglide I do use for around my writsts (long sleeve wetsuit), around my ankles, and around the neck....

Hope this helps!

Good Luck, Have Fun!!

x2 on the body glide.  The spray is called Suit Juice.  You can usually get it any place that sells wet suits.

Back of the neck, very important for the body glide if your suit comes up a bit on the neck, otherwise you might chafe.

On a happy note, the weather report for sunday is improving.

Swam at Centennial Beach tonight.  It was cool but I swam in a regular swim suit and regular cap, no ear plugs and I was fine.  Not sure what the temp was but I would say if you are a regular swimmer you will be fine.  It wasn't bath water bu any means but I wasnt uncomfortable.  Hope this helps.

I called a few days ago and they said the water temp was 68 degrees.  Hopefully your swim means it has gotten warmer :-)

Tried my wetsuit for the first time tonight. I think it's a bit big but I guess it'll do.

Thanks to those that are reporting about the water!
