Okay here is the situation.

I am converting my bike to a tri bike and all I have left to purchase is the bar end shifters. I have a nine speed rear cassette from shimano.

Does it matter which shifters I buy, so long as they are nine speed or do I have to get shifters specifically for my Front derailuer?

You can't get campy stuff, I think sram will work but not sure. I'd call the bike shop and ask. You can get almost any shifter TO work, but if they aren't the right match you'd have to run it in friction mode.

Apparently not. I have to be honest the only reason I looked at this thread was because of the word "Bar" "Bar End Shifters" would be a good name for a drinking club it's definitely up there with "Dive Bar Dashers"

You're probably like the rest of us and have Shimano, so just get the 9 speed Shimano bar end shifters.  These are compatible with either a double or triple front, and 9-speed in the back.  I don't know if this is the best deal there is, but this is what you need:

it is best to get the same brand of shifters as your drive train (derailleurs) but any that are shimano campatible will work.

Cassette doesn't matter as much as the derailleurs.

I agree with Chris and Chile.

I work on my own bike.  (It's about the only thing I like about biking.)

If you want indexing it's important that the rear shifter/deraileur combo index match.  If you already have a shimano rear deraileur then I would say find a shimano (or shimano compatible) shifter.  I don't think campy and shimano are interchangeable in this regard.  IMHO the front match doesn't matter much because you're not indexing.  (If you have 3 front rings I have no idea if this still applies).

Be aware that depending upon your frame size and bar setup, the shift cables that come with the standard shimano DA shifters may or may not make it to the rear deraileur when mounted on the end of long aero bars.  (Mine had about 1/4" to spare)

Thank you all for your responses. I hope to be able to show off my handy work on Sunday.

I will have the new shifters tomorrow. I am getting Dura Ace 9 speed shifters.

I'm excited to soon have a tri specific bike.
