Subject: Cassette Question

So I have moved  to the PA mountains and need new gearing.  Unfortunately my tri bike is not the best option for this but that is all I have.

So I am working with shimano components.  Currently have a double fron 39-53 and a 12-25 rear 9 speed cassette.   I have been looking to get a deal on a 12-27 but have not found much.  Today I stumbled on a 11-28 from Nashbar (see link below).  First would this even be shimano compatible, is is for a road bike or MTB?  Would this be a good  option or would the spacing between gears be too great and should I look for a 12-27.

 Thanks.

A lot more than $17! (closer to $60).  But you get what you pay for.  I switched out my cassette for a 12-27, but my bike runs Ultegra SL, and I kept that level.  I got it on sale last year for around $70 or $80. If you are willing to try to mix component systems like that, take a look at the SRAM for about $50.

I purchased a 9 spd Ultegra 12-27 from Pro Bike Kit a few months ago for $ 40. Looks like they're currently out of stock. As said, 28 teeth may be past the limit of your current rear derailleur.... I think 27 is the max... just check it. Good luck.

I have Shimano Ultegra components 10 speed and the specs are max 27 but I raced with Sram 11-28 last year. It took a little to get it dialed in but it worked fine and gave me another gear.

Other option is to change to a compact crank but that is more expensive than swapping out the cassette.

Thanks for the help.  I will pass on the 28 and just get a 27.

I actually have a SRAM 12-25 and tried to change it to a Shimano 12-27.  I never could get dialed in.  So I have a very lightly used shimano ultegra 9sp cs-6500 12-27 cassette sitting on my work bench in the garage.  If you're interested, shoot me a pm.

I'd just go with a compact up front, it may cost more than a new cassette but will ultimatly give you more flexability.
