Age Group Rank = 25/42
Pre-race routine:

I got up around 4:30,made sure I had everything packed up, loaded the car and left around 5:30. I had some Gatorade and an apple on the way down to Ole Miss University.
Got my race packet, marked and transition area setup and then headed toward the pool.
Event warmup:

Swam 150 meters, trying to get ready for a 50 meter pool, instead of the 25 yard pool I train in. Started to notice that my goggles were filling with water then found out the nose piece was cracking. I had no other goggles, so I asked the RD if there were any in the lost and found, and used a pair that was tied together.
Swim
  • 08m 56s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt really good in the pool. It was different for me since I train in a 25 yd pool and this was a 50 meter pool. I was able to pass about 6 or 7 people and never got out of my stroke. It was very easy to pass people int he pool, I do think alot of people guessed at their times though.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a backup pair of goggles.
Transition 1
  • 03m 54s
Comments:

T1 was different due to the cold weather. I ran out of the pool, grabbed my towel and tried to dry off as I ran to my bike. Was very cold (low 40's) I put on my shirt and long sleeve shirt first, dried off feet and put on socks, then dried leggs and got into my tights. Shoes went on and left out, it actually went pretty well under the circumstances.

I grabbed a Gu, and it was hard from the weather, which made it hard to get down.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, it was a wether thang!
Bike
  • 46m 56s
  • 21 kms
  • 26.85 km/hr
Comments:

Overall the course was great except for one part when they had us go through a circle drive that had a ton of losse gravel, which was scary. Someone said that the bikes were not supposeto go ont he circle, but since everyone did it, guess it is no big deal.

I passed more people on this race than I have ever passed on the bike stage before. I felt strong.
What would you do differently?:

drink more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

no real issues to talk about here
What would you do differently?:

practice more
Run
  • 29m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Fought off cramps in the calves in the beginning. I maintained a steady pace, never stopping (except to stretch the calves out). Met up with a guy that would run, then stop, run ahead and then stopped, so I told him to run with me and we helped get each other through it.
My feet were killing me after about 2k. Every step felt worse. I was hoping my orthotics would have been in by racetime, but they weren't done I guess.
What would you do differently?:

more bricks in training and get the Dr. to finish my orthotics! I was happy I was able to maintain a pcae, but I feel like I could do better on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Bananna and water, walked around, got a leg massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

feet hurting

Event comments:

Was a good race, was the best time I have ever had in a Sprint Tri, so I am thrilled with that!

Forgot to add this:

As I was leaving and putting my bike up, an old man with his dog asked me what was going on. I told him it was a triathlon. He stopped and looked at all the people as I continued on. He then asks me "where did ya swim?" and I told him "in the pool" as I walked on. He then said, "that's kind of week insn't it?" I stopped for a second, then I turned around and said " can you do it?" and walked off to my car.

Great race!  And in the cold?!  You are much more dedicated than I.  What a way to start your season.  Keep it up!

Sorry I missed your race.  Great job...I think this was the first official tri of the season out of our group.  Really good times out there considering all the challenges with the weather and all.  And what is up with that old man saying the pool swim was weak??  Great response...i wish we had pool swim tri's down here but i guess the weather is warm enough so we never do.
