Subject: RE: VO2/RMR Test Results!

Anybody get the email from Nick about phase 2 of the research study today?

Sounds like an amazing training opportunity. I however will not be participating. I'm committed to my training for SOMA and will not give up the tri training. I'd love to get in on this but SOMA would be a suffer fest if I dropped the tri training two months out from the race. My initial instinct was to commit to phase two and just do the tri training anyways (even though they don't want you to) but I don't have the time or ability to possibly workout three times a day.

If anybody is doing phase two, please update your experience/progress. It would be interesting to follow.

I got that email as well. I would totally bail on SOMA training for Phase 2, but I can't commit to 100% participation in the study.

You would bail even if you had already paid for SOMA? I guess you'd be paying $200 for this training as opposed to doing SOMA.

IDK, it's a great opportunity but if I really enjoied that sort of training then I'd be doing that and not triathlons. If there was a way to participate after SOMA I'd totally do it but I've been enjoying my SOMA training and I'm looking forward to the race.

I would bail on training for SOMA, but I'd still race SOMA. I suspect that the training you'd get in this study would prepare you well for SOMA.  It's not perfect, but it would add some fitness.

Yeah, I'm not sure. If SOMA were a sprint or an OLY then I'd be more inclined to think so. I've never done a HIM but I'm not sure how one would perform come race day with no s/b/r training. I'm sure you would finish if that's all that was important to you but if you're shooting for a time goal that requires you to push yourself then I think you would be hurt by it.

Regardless, somebody is gonna get some amazing training for free!

Got the email. They know you can't commit 100%, but they want you to try.

I just paid for Silverman Half on Friday. I'm torn about doing that, and still
getting in one swim, one long run and one long ride a week or not
doing the study. I just don't think you can expect to do a half to close to
your potential without weekly 50+ bike rides and 10+ mile runs. (Obviously
hitting those as you peak).

I know of people who have done HIT or something else instead of tri specific
training and done ok at HIM or IM, but they are better athletes than I am.

I agree.

My last two tris I've underperformed due to lack of fitness. It's not fun sabotaging yourself like that.

Congrats on Silverman, that course is no joke. Best to focus on S/B/R for that!

I got the message too.  I am in the same boat, training for SOMA.  I'm going to give Nick a call and see if I can get an idea on what the training will consist of.  My email said 90 minute workouts (stationary bike, endless pool, elliptical, and treadmill.)  It sounds like an awesome opportunity.  Plus another set of body fat scanning and VO2 testing would be nice.

Does anyone know how often those 90 min workouts are?  Mon-Fri?  3x week?

[I was afraid this would conflict with my training plans (I'm not doing SOMA, but IMAZ is just a month later), but was hoping they'd start phase 2 just AFTER the race season.]

My recollection from talking to Nicholas was that it was 6x/week.

Yeah, if they put this starting 12/1 or 1/1 it would be much better.

Maybe they would let us triathletes do phase 2 after November. I think there are a lot of us that participated in the study and if enough of us "drop out" then maybe they'd be willing to allow a group of triathletes start after the triathlon season. Anybody that hasn't spoken to Nick yet might want to inquire about the possibility of that.

Just an FYI. We just started doing the New Leaf VO2 Testing in our office in Mesa. We are running a special to get the word out.

$120 for for ALL 3 test. Resting, Bike Exercise and Run Exercise. That includes your own mask.

It has to be done over 2 days. You can do a resting and one exercise in the same day, then come back for the other exercise test.

Everyone who participated check your email.  Nick sent out another with the dates of the trainig program.  I am going to go for it.  8-weeks of professional coaching and training for free is hard to turn down.  First session starts Sept. 21 and the second Sept 28.  Workout sessions are 90 minutyes and start at either 6:00 am or 8:00 am.  I haven't signed up for SOMA so maybe I will try to get a relay together for that one this year.  Heck maybe the training will be Sealedgood enough to get me trained for SOMA.

If you haven't joined and are a male under 40 you can still get the initial tests completed prior to the start of Phase 2.

How frequent are the training sessions?

5-6x a week. (I don't know which, since that's actually a big difference )

I think I'm going to do it and then go by feel if I bail on SilverMan. I can do that next year. Can't do this next year.

(Even though I have already paid for SilverMan. Might just make it a vacation weekend. We'll see).

I told Nicholas that I'm in too and asked for group 1, 6am.

It'll be nice to meet you folks in person, as I've been lurking on the AZ forum for a while now.
