Sunny
Total Time = 1h 26m 55s
Overall Rank = 38/130
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 3/13
Pre-race routine:

Bagel & bottle of OJ 2 hrs before
Power cookie 45 minutes before
Ran a little but I had my son w/ me & had to get him situated as it was windy and cool.
Event warmup:

Ran about quarter mile, not enough of the warmup I wanted.
Swim
  • 15m 40s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Once again, a very tough swim but, I'm glad I've now experienced adverse conditions in open water. I was pleased w/navigation as several swimmers veered well off course.
What would you do differently?:

How do you prepare for those conditions? I do think the time in the pool was beneficial as far as the intervals that build endurance. A very good swim in in light of the choppy waters...
Transition 1
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

Had difficulty removing wetsuit...I had applied baby oil per Orca's instructions but maybe not enough. In reviewing other T1 times though, I did well...looks like others had the same issue?
What would you do differently?:

Practice wetsuit removal...the rest of the transition was good.
Bike
  • 39m 19s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.31 mile/hr
Comments:

This is the 4th sprint tri on this course and by far the fastest time.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time training in hills which I plan on doing this summer.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Had small problem with one of the quick locks on the laces...one of the laces had coem out & I had to re-thread otherwise I was out of there in under a minute.
Run
  • 27m 38s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Although it was a personal best in the run at this sprint distance, I am still SLOW & realize I need to work harder at the run. I am modifying my training plans leading to St Anthony's to be much more run focused.
Post race
Event comments:

A "tune-up" race for the upcoming season and a chance to work out kinks. There was also, simultaneously, an OLY being done.

I love racing in Clermont & this course is my favorite. I am registered for the 1/2 IM in Clermont in Oct & look forward to that race & the sprint series in Clermont over the summer.

Swimming
00:15:40 | 800 yards | 01m 58s / 100yards
Age Group: 3/13
Overall: 0/130
Performance: Good
Suit: Sleeveless Wetsuit
Course: One of the roughest swims I've done...NE winds of 20 mph produced very choppy waters, I couldn't breathe left at all or I would get a mouth full of water. I heard the same comment from other racers. Anything to do with technical swim stroke was abandoned in lieu of just making it through the conditions.

Course: For those not from Florida it is hard to believe we have serious hills but, Clermont is known for challenging hills (it is why it is the TRI training capital in FL) and is the reason I like the course. The first 4 miles were into the headwinds then we turned south & I got some speeds of 25 mph for short time. The hills are tough when you mostly train on flat terrain...this summer, I plan on spending time training in Clermont on those hills.

Good job! 3rd in your age group..does that mean some hardware?

I think several people from the Hammerheads were down there racing; I met Freddy Bailys in Tampa this weekend (at a gym meet for our daughters, of all places) and he was heading down there.

I really love that area; I think I'd enjoy racing there more than the BFAS triathlon at the beaches. I'll have to look and see if there are more races for later this summer.

No hardware, just a medal to all finishers...BTW - check out sommersports.com for the sprint series over the summer in Clermont. They hold 4 races from June through September if your interested.

Sounds like a good race under tough conditions.  I had looked at this race for my opener (first ever), but ended up choosing one closer to home and a little later.  I did all the recon work though and it IS a great area for racing.

Maybe I'll get to one later in the year down there.

Thanks for the tip! I think I may sign up for the series..I had been holding off on registering for the BFAS just because the money for one race was so high. Doing 4 races for about the price of 2 of the BFAS events sounds pretty good, and they don't interfere with the Hammerhead (Aug. 28th).
