Subject: Advice on new purchases in 2009?

Just beginning the 2009 season and soliciting feedback regarding some new purchase options for the 2009 season.

2009 Goal: finish HIM in Sept

Background:

MOPer, AG 35-40. Do tris to challenge self, stay fit, and have fun

- Swim 60-80 percentile

- Bike 20-40 percentile

- Run 20-40 percentile

- Overall 40- 50 percentile

- Oly time ~3hrs

Currently have a sturdy but heavy 2002 GT model road bike (3 ring) with aero bars and clip ins w/shoes. No wetsuit or other equipment. History of running (cross county, team sports, etc). Limited bike experience. No formal swim training (but strongest event… go figure).

Considering the following options:

A. Wetsuit

B. Bike Trainer

C. New Bike

D. Bike Fit

E. Swim stroke analysis

F. New running shoes

G. Other?

Any input/recommendations on items that would be the best purchase toward reaching the goal of finishing a HIM? Top 2 choices?

Thanks, Scott

Start with D and E and then go with the rest.

Really depends on your budget.

A new bike would come with a bike fit but is most expensive. You will need new running shoes as they only last so long.

Wetsuit will help doing ows depending on where you will be racing and water temps.

I'd skip bike trainer if you live in area where you can train outside most of the time now it is spring/summer. Living in Northern US you will need one for winter.

Since you swim well I'd skip the swim stroke analysis unless you can get some swim lessons even 2-3 might help you avoid ingraining bad habits that are harder to break a year or two from now---I know that first hand.

Enjoy your journey to your first HIM!

Isn't that the chorus to "Lucy in the sky with diamonds"?

Agree with above.  Be sure to get the new shoes fit by someone who knows what they are doing.

Will your HIM in September be wetsuit legal? And would that allow you to get more OWS training now?

I'd say running shoes are a must, then the wetsuit for your Half, bike fit (unless yo can afford a new bike), and just keep your eye out for a good used trainer.

You have good results on the swim, so long as you are not having pains or wearing yourself out swimming, I'd skip the stroke analysis or save it for last. Are you biking and running much slower after swimming than just doing them by themselves?

Sept HIM will likely be wetsuit legal (actually would prefer it not be) but I have an Oly in June which will be low 60s watertemp. I've been against getting a wetsuit but figure I'll need to get one at some point (for temperature and efficiency reasons). I did an Oly last year without a wetsuit and the water was 64. It went ok but I think I counted only 3 or 4 other guys without a suit.

I'll be purchasing the running shoes shortly. Weather is nice now for outside bike rides but I have two little ones at home and the trainer might come in handy from time to time.

I could afford a new bike but I'm not sure it would make much for a difference for a MOPer who is just looking to finish a longer distance.

Bike and run times are about the same after swimming (sometimes better with a swim 'warm up'). I've done plenty of running in the past but have never been fast. I haven't had any swim analysis done so I thought it might be an opportunity for easy gains even though it is a (relative) strength.

Anyone want to talk me into or out of this wetsuit being offered at our local tri shop? ~$200  I've never had a wetsuit and was looking to get one for this season at a 'reasonable' price.
