This was my first half and it was a really fun race for me. I have to admit the last few miles were a little tough with the sun starting to beat down on you. I did not see anything crazy out there except for all the snakes on the bike course - anybody else run over one? I must have seen 10 or so. The bike course was pretty windy but a lot more flat than I am used to in Charlotte. We had a great time down there and I appreciate all the encouragement from everyone. Anybody have any stories or wackyness from the Half or Sprint races?

I did the half.  It was my first and I went into it really undertrained but figured I had paid so let's see how it goes.  I was completely freakoed out about the swim and that was the best part of my day.  I underestimated how far 56 miles was and how that would impact my run.  I finished, slowly, but I finished.  I guess from here I can only get fastewr.  I loved the lake and thought it was superbly put together!!

last year on the bike it felt like you had a head wind (somehow) for 90% of the bike ride. was that the way it was this year?

I would say it was a pretty strong headwind until at least mile 40.

This year the wind was coming from the SW, so we had a tailwind for the first few miles, but then a crosswind from the right as soon as you turned onto 210.  Towards the end of 210 you turned straight into the wind.  Once you turned onto 53 to head back to the FFA you got a crosswind to from the left, though every once in a while you would turn north enough to get a little tailwind.  But hey, it's white lake.  It's going to be windy.  And hot.

The snakes were funny.  I think I saw three, two of which looked to be sizeable copperheads, though it's tough to tell at race pace.   I almost ran over a little one close to T2.

Loved the new run course.  Sooooooo much better than last year.  Mostly single file the whole way.  In previous years it got to be a real mess by the time I started my second lap with all the congestion.

I am doing White Lake Half II and I am already done, I was doing it as a relay and we lost our swimmer. We are done. it is too late to pick up a swimmer who is ready for a 1 mile swim.

I think we are going to bag it as none of us has been able to train as needed and I am sure ther are cutoffs on each leg. I know I probably would not make the bike cutoff.

Plus I am on a kicking antibiotic.. It is kickin' my arse. I can't stay awake. Don't you love side effects!?!?!

Also, anyone else think the refs were out in force this year?  It seemed unusually strong.  Loads of race number violations on the run in both races.  More "unauthorized accessories" than I ever recall seeing, too.

I noticed the refs a TON more this year.  Every 5 minutes, here came one on a motorcycle.  I was extra, extra careful on the bike.  It was tough, because I had a lot of ground to make up.  That second lap always gets dicey!  But, I did thank the ones I saw afterwards for being out there.  I think it does help.  I do wish the refs would make a point of finding the athlete and letting them know why they got the penalty afterwards; might help prevent repeat offenders!

So that's what those motorcycles were all about! Yes I'm a dork.  I was wondering how the ref's operated. Too bad they missed the athena/clysdale couple pulling a big draft on the half on Saturday.  They were doing it while passing a bunch of people too.  One lady even commented to me while we were riding!

Yeah there was an overabundance of penalties it seemed. Most of them were at the first turn on the run where if you stepped out of the cones they wrote you down.

That was supposed to be a DQ, and the only DQs I saw were from the sprint for chinstrap & bike spec.  I think they may not have enforced that one very rigorously.  Going outside the cones used to be a big problem on the old course, but didn't seem as bad this time around since it wasn't as congested.

What's up with the lack of photos from the half?   I can't believe they only had one photographer for each section.  I was expecting at least 2 more out on the bike course and just as many on the run.  Very disappointing!

I got two photos from each sport.  For the swim finish & bike, that was two too many.  And for one of the run finish photos, I'm pretty sure it was of someone else b/c I would never act that way.

Really, how many pictures of you riding along could you want?  How different could they be?  I liked the picture a few years ago from transition, but apart from that the pictures are pretty much:

1) whew, I sure am glad i'm on the {bike/run}

2) whew, I sure am glad I'm almost done with the {bike/run}

3) In another 10 meters I am going to spew (this may just be applicable to me and nuthouse)

In other words, I feel like I got plenty of pictures.  In fact, I got pictures of things I'd rather not remember.  So what, in particular, were you expecting to capture for posterity?

I was mearly commenting that there were few photographers on the course.  I understand the photos would be similar, but it would have been nice to have a few to choose from. (I had one bike and one run). As someone mentioned, if it was a bad shot or someone else was blocking your photo, you would appreciate the option.  And if you didn't have family/friends there to take pictures you are at the mercy of the race photographers. Remember this was a first race for several participants and they might enjoy several action shots of themselves or interesting candid shots of the whole race experience.  I have done races before that had photographers stationed at different positions throughout the course and it was nice to see the progression and the variety as I mentioned.
