Total Time = 3h 12m 56s
Overall Rank = 198/337
Age Group = 40 - 44
Age Group Rank = 30/45
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3 to meet partners at 4:30 and drive to AL
Event warmup:

Ran .5 mile to warm up
Run
  • 39m 37s
  • 5 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Pace off the hook! Depending on who you talk to, either myself or Chris was pushing the pace. At every mile we'd look at our hr monitors and say "We're going too fast", then it would get quiet and nothing would change. I think our pace actually increased towards the end of the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it was an exceptional run for me.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on the crank arm thing.
Bike
  • 1h 43m 30s
  • 33.48 miles
  • 19.41 mile/hr
Comments:

An exceptional bike for me, average cadence was up, average speed was up, managed to do well on the uphills on the first lap, hung in the aero bars for the downhills with no speed wobble. Actually managed to stay aero for almost the entire ride. Second lap suffered. The course is a very hilly two lap cours with strong winds. Apparently the winds are normal for this event.
What would you do differently?:

Need to spend more time training on hammering in the aero position - half way through the bike glutes started really hurting and had to stand and stretch
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Run
  • 46m 12s
  • 5 miles
  • 09m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Paid for the ridiculous first run and bike on this run. Was a struggle to keep going but managed to run the entire way. Not much of a pace, though.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure I would make any changes. I think I just need to train harder so that my second run can be more comfortable after the first run and bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate free food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training

Event comments:

This is considered one of the premier duathlons in the world and attended by many international pros. For me it was an exceptionally fast race, I just need to work more on being comfortable in the aero position and being able to put in a strong run after the bike.
