Comments:

Swim was ROUGH. I started hyperventilating or something about 1/3 of the way through, and started getting the "oh my gosh am I gonna make it?" thoughts. Got a couple mouthfuls of water, and felt like I was about to throw up about 1/2-way through. The middle 1/3rd was just rough. I was gasping for air and paused ~2 seconds every 50yds. Finally by the last 1/3rd I calmed down a bit and got back into it.
Got passed twice.
I'm glad I pulled through it - it was tough.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim better! Focus on swim endurance. Too often in the pool I'll stop every 50yds. And focus on something other than the guy that just passed me.
Transition 1
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

Had a hard time getting my shirt on. I wasn't fully dry and it was kinda sticking to me. Also took too long getting on my bike, I think. But that's pretty minor, only 1-2 seconds.
Overall, T1 time was slow.
Bike
  • 39m 41s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was GREAT!! I passed 9 people, including one guy that I had been eyeing for about 8 miles, and every time I got close he would notice me and pull away. Finally caught him just before the final straightaway.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more. Had only one sip of fluid.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Was a bit unsteady after dismounting. Only removed one of my shoes from the toeclips before dismounting, so if my other foot had gotten caught I would have fallen.
Run
  • 29m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was fine. Not amazing, not bad. Never really pushed it, just plugged along. Legs felt awkward coming off the bike. Passed ~3-4 people, got passed ~5-6 times.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a while. Did some stretching. After a few minutes, felt fine!

Way to go Tom! Woo Hoo! Congratulations. Nice to see you did the passing on the bike too! 18 mph is excellent. I'm very jealous. Huge day man! Did you get any pics????

Also impressed how you handled the swim...especially when you start dealing with breathing issues.  Very smart of you to take a few secs and then crank out another 50-100y.

Hearty Congrats.

Great race Tom! Excellent bike segment - you smoked your goal! Great job getting through the swim. Hope you got some pics!  What's next on your list? Triangle? I hope to meet you there!

You Rock, Tom!

Congrats, Tom! Great race and an awesome job getting through the swim. I had a similar experience...great to see that you were able to tough it out as well. I know just how hard that is when you start hyperventilating in the middle of a pack of crazed swimmers...I sure had all the kayakers/lifegaurds nervous for a few minutes last Sunday!

Good job on the bike...it's always fun to play pac-man...there was a guy I wanted to catch on Sunday that I just couldn't pass (found him on the run though!).

Don't worry about the run time/placing. Triathlon is all about learning how to be able to run after swimming and biking. It just takes a little time. My first sprint was very similar to yours but I am SLOWLY (really slowly) getting better on the run. It will be fine to see how super-runner (nycowl) does in his first triathlon.
