Total Time = 1h 37m 20s
Overall Rank = 191/440
Age Group = Super Clydes
Age Group Rank = 4/15
Pre-race routine:

The usual, wake up at some ungodly early hour. Oatmeal, milk, banana, gatorade consumed over a few hours.
Event warmup:

Is getting into my wetsuit not warmup enough? Hung out in the water swimming 25M repeats waiting for my wave.
Swim
  • 09m 20s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was originally going to be 400 in a river but there was too much debris in the river so it was changed to a 600M ocean swim. Solid overall, I was maybe 3rd around the 1st buoy. Some guy zig-zagging slammed into me 2-3 times on the straightaway (or was it me zigging). Coming around the last buoy I kept convincing myself that I should be able to touch (to start dolphining) and I ended up stopping 3-4 times trying to catch the ground and losing all forward momentum (and getting pushed even further off course by the current).
What would you do differently?:

Just swim. Catch a draft.
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

Terrible. Got tangled up in the suit and stomped on it to get it off. Tried to to wipe the sand off with a towel and it didn't come off at all, ended up using my neighbors water trough. Socks were hard to get on (and they were anklets).
What would you do differently?:

Not be a klutz with the suit. Consider skipping the socks.
Bike
  • 49m 27s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.20 mile/hr
Comments:

Tailwind going out, I knew I was in trouble when I made the turnaround in less than 20 minutes (I hadn't realized how strong the tail wind was). No rule enforcement at all. I passed two pace lines and I saw a peloton of 7-8 people going back the other way, it was kind of annoying.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta get out on the bike more. Really happy with keeping my cadence up, I feel like it helped my run a lot.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Blew threw nicely. Almost ran over the guy pointing out where to turn when he stepped out in front of me. Forgot to hit the split button on my watch so the time is included in the bike, but it was fast, 30-45 seconds maybe.
Run
  • 35m 56s
  • 4 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt okay, was starting to get a little warm by the time I got going. On the way back a girl I passed made me laugh when she said (as I passed), "Alright! Another big, sexy clydesdale to break through the wind for me." Then she ended up outkicking me by a few seconds (but I felt better since she started a wave in front of me). Really feel like I should be running 30-45 seconds a mile faster at that distance.
What would you do differently?:

I guess I need more speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Dry heaved.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I dunno, my fat ass and a stiff wind.

Event comments:

Nice race, some rule enforcment would be nice. Finished well within the top half for the first time, so does that make me a mid-packer instead of a BOPer? Sweet.

Good race, Brett! I was worried about getting my wetsuit off. I saw a guy taking his off in the water. He was actually sitting down in the water. I might try that next time. I was also annoyed by the lack of enforcement on drafting, not to mention the guy who stayed on my a$$ almost all the way back into that wind.

What wave were you in? That might have been me. I hate running in them and seems loads faster to do it in knee deep water.

Nope, not me then, I was in the fat guy wave at the end. But I strongly advocate the yanking the wetsuit in knee to ankle deep water. The benefits are numerous and I am hard pressed to think of any disadvantages as compared to pulling it off in the transition area.

Thanks, for that advice...I'll be following it in 2 1/2 weeks at the Gulf Coast Tri. Are you doing that one?

Nope, I was going to volunteer but it turns out I'll be out of town. Good luck, I 've heard it's one of the better races in the region.
