Expert 878 Tallahassee, FL | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! SweetK - 2009-05-29 9:12 PM davealt - 2009-05-29 8:59 AM Very sensitive... I was being sarcastic and making a little friendly smack lighten up SweetK - 2009-05-28 10:00 PM rkreuser - 2009-05-28 12:00 PM Wings in 5. Sadly the Wings is all Detroit has in terms of strong Professional teams... the Lions suck, the Tigers suck, the Pistons suck... This is the year for Pittsburgh - Steelers NFL Champs, Pirates are doing OK, and the Pens rock! The energy is unbelievably in favor of the Penguins and you can feel they are hungry for it and will get it this year!!! Reading this thread... the Wings fans are already talking about injuries... so if they lose it's because they're injured whereas they probably aren't hungry enough to win it. The Wings can have our left-overs, we obviously don't need them to win, but Detroit obviously did to get this far And I know this because Detroit has all Pittsburgh's the best players. And I'm going Saturday night. The Tigers have a 4 game lead on their division right now, plus a WS appearance in '06, so they aren't terrible. The Lions? Yeah, ok, they suck. I don't really keep up with the NBA. Regardless, I don't think the other sports teams in the city have an effect on the motivation of the other teams. Maybe the fans get a little more fired up, but you'd think fans in a city like Detroit would have a lot of reasons to want to see this Red Wings team do well. I think both teams are going to come into the series with a lot of positive energy. I mentioned the injuries only because I hope we get healthy before the series starts. I wouldn't blame losing on injuries, I would blame losing on getting beat by a better team. That being said, when two of your best players are injured before a big series, and a second defenseman injured causes your team to only rotate four defensemen (for the most part, two others get very nominal ice time), it's going to be talked about. Just like Gonchar's injury was a topic of discussion when the Pens were in 10th place in the east during the first part of the regular season, and a hot topic when he had the knee-on-knee hit with Ovechkin in the Capitals series. As fans, we don't want to go into any game without our A-game, which means having everyone healthy. Sorry! Didn't mean for it too come across as defensive...I just wanted to further the conversation...I live in Florida where no one pays attention to hockey, so when the opportunity comes up to discuss it, I tend to run with it...while throwing down some friendly smack of my own. Regular 157 Bay City, MI | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! Wings in 6! Depth plays too key a roll and with the pens only playing 11 forwards they will wear out their 2 big guns in a long series. yes Dats is out but we still have 4-5 30+ goal scorers in the lineup. and then there are all those points from the blue line. Marc-Andre FiveHole trips again this year and Crysbaby takes the #55 freight train to concussionville. oh and lest ye forget THIS IS HOCKEYTOWN! |

Champion 6627 Rochester Hills, Michigan | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! Game 1: Wings 3-1. Why it turned out the way it did: 1) Osgood. The guy played well again. Best player on the ice tonight. 2) The boards. Fleury clearly wasn't handling the lively boards. 3) Pens missed chances: twice there were breakaways with mishandled pucks. 4) Pens power play: not much there, kinda underwhelming. 5) Because the outcome's inevitable. That being said, the first period was pretty good hockey with big hitting and tic-tac-toe passing from both sides, completely enjoyable to watch. By the 2nd period it was choppier, not all that much flow, a LOT more turnovers. I don't think either team lived up to their potential, looking for better hockey in game 2. |

That "backup goaltender" completely shut the Pens down last night... but you are right the Pens are a much different team, they lost Hossa and never really replaced him :D Go Red Wings!! |

Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! Fine game last night...good to watch, although I wish we could get the CBC feed instead of NBC. First star of the game: Osgood - rocks. But since I have a huge fan-crush on him, that's kind of my inevitable first star. Second star of the game: Depth...Wings got it, Pens...well, what can you say. Just look at the ice time - Helm is playing as much as anyone (except Zetterberg, since he's playing the baby Crosby). And Cleary. Heck, we got a nice score from Abdelkader. Yeah, it sucks that Dats is out, but we're not crippled by it. Third star of the game: Refs. Other than that really bad missed call on Cooke, the refs were pretty fair and let the boys play. The pace of the game was exciting and was good for both teams. Looking forward to tonight's game! |

Veteran 144 Lewisville | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! Osgood did play well enough to win the game, but that doesn't mean he played well. He gave up far to many rebounds and got bailed out by his D. That being said, he won the game and that's what matters. However, on almost any other team in the league he's a backup - always has been, always will be. We'll see how the old Detroit legs hold up against the young Pens tonight. I'm just looking for some good hockey. |

However, on almost any other team in the league he's a backup - always has been, always will be. Rediculous. Two Jennings Trophies. 10th in wins all-time, tied with Hasek and ahead of Barasso, and next year he'll pass Grant Fuhr. 3 Stanley Cups. And this years' Conn Smythe winner, in addition to owning the Pens the first two games. I guarantee you'd trade Osgood straight up for Fleury. We'll see how the old Detroit legs hold up against the young Pens tonight. Looks like pretty well. I'm just looking for some good hockey. Well, we didn't see it last night, again. What we saw was chippy hockey where the only decent players on the ice were Zetterberg and Osgood. Sid also continued his Cup drought - pointless, although he has made some great passes, spins, etc. To back up that NHL poster boy status he's gotta get off the dime. |

I would not trade Osgood for Fleury - the upside with Fleury is too greatand Osgood has benefited from playing on a great team. I think you could plug a lot of goalies into the Wings and they'd be successful. However, Osgood is showing this year and last that when it matters, he stops the pucks that have to be stopped (unlike Fleury - lot of soft goals this series). As for the Jennings trophies - i think he has Hasek and Vernon to thank for those. All his wins - played on some great Red Wings teams.
Sid also continued his Cup drought - pointless, although he has made some great passes, spins, etc. To back up that NHL poster boy status he's gotta get off the dime. Yes, the pens are playing like a bunch of immature kids and they are getting dominated by a much better team. It's not over, but it's not looking good. |

Like Pierre said last night, a team is never in trouble in the playoffs until they lose on home ice. The Pens for sure look like they are fired up, so although the 'Wings are in a pretty good spot, it's going to be tough winning in Mellon Arena. Here's hoping we can play more like we did in the 3rd period last night for an entire 60 minute game. Go Wings! |

Golden Boy - You look like your 12 with that bad excuse for a beard! That stat is a little off too me it's just not illustrating the truth of the matter as too how bad the pens have it. I like this one better. it's from NHL.com 33 -- Times that a team has won the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final, including Detroit against Pittsburgh in each of the last two springs. Of the previous 32, only the 1971 Chicago Blackhawks failed to win the Stanley Cup. and as for the comments of Pierre Maquire regarding a team is not in trouble until they lose at home. That is true unless you don't have home ice advantage as you HAVE to win a game on the road. |
