Total Time = 2h 07m 3s
Overall Rank = 100/137
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

Arrived with plenty of time to spare, relaxed until about 4:15 when I started getting ready for the race. Waited in line for transition for about ten minutes (first-come, first-served spots).
Event warmup:

One lap around the track, then jog to bathrooms, with small loop around the pit area.
Run
  • 15m 51s
  • 1.75 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I started easy, since my training has not been up to snuff. I settled into a nice comfortable pace and held steady. I wasn't passing anybody, but I wasn't getting passed either, so I was pretty happy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

I was slow getting onto the bike and really slow getting clipped in. Sigh.
What would you do differently?:

Never mind getting clipped in and just start rolling.
Bike
  • 32m 35s
  • 10.2 miles
  • 18.78 mile/hr
Comments:

My calves started cramping lightly on the first hill, second lap. I had to baby them up the hills in order to avoid a full-blown cramp.
What would you do differently?:

Have to work on finding something with electrolytes that I can actually stomach.
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

I tried taking transition very slowly due to the cramping issues. But as I was putting my left sneaker on, my calf cramped intensely. It's never happened in a race before and it sucks!!
What would you do differently?:

Electrolytes?? I don't really know.
Run
  • 17m 35s
  • 1.75 miles
  • 10m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

My calf hurt! I stopped at the aid station just outside transition and guzzled two cups of Gatorade, then hobbled off. I was able to jog the whole way, but I definitely wasn't happy with my pace.
Transition 3
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Better than T1, but still not great.
Bike
  • 34m 57s
  • 10.2 miles
  • 17.51 mile/hr
Comments:

I was still dealing with the hurting calf, so my pace was quite a bit slower than I knew I could do. Frustrating. But I so enjoyed the venue; racing on the speedway was even more exhilarating than last year because it was dry! The only time you had to use your brakes was going into transition.
Transition 4
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

I took transition incredibly slowly to avoid another cramp.
What would you do differently?:

Run
  • 20m 27s
  • 1.75 miles
  • 11m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

As I started running out of transition, my knee started to have an unusual hurt. So again, I hobbled along the run course. I had to walk at times, but jogged most of the way.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk to car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cramping, lack of training.

Event comments:

I hope they continue to host this race as it will always be one that I will continue to do. The venue is incredible and the format is challenging, but not too difficult. Maybe next year I can do better!

Nice job getting thru the whole race with your calf issues!  Sorry that happened during a race and I'm totally jealous that you get to do this...I can only imagine how cool it is to do it at Watkins Glen Raceway!!!!

Sorry to hear about the cramping, but you still had a pretty good race, considering!!  I'm definitely thinking about adding this race to my schedule next year!
