Overall Rank = 111/303

Age Group Rank = 4/11
Pre-race routine:

Honey Nut Cheerios and a banana. We caravaned from the Carey's in Blue Ridge to race site about a 15-20 minute drive. I needed a bathroom stop, non-wetsuit type, which is normally taken care of before I get to site. A little different than when I just need to worry about myself. I did not walk to/from the bike/run entry exits like I normally do.
Event warmup:

Basically none which is not my norm. TriRochester tent setup and bathroom stop took most of my time. No run or bike warmup. I got to the water and 2 minutes later we were told to get out. This had little effect on the race itself.

2:11 per 100 yd. Consensus was swim course was long. Results only show time, not splits or rankings. I was 4/11 in AG so that is better than normal. I was a little disappointed in my time but if course was long that explains some of it. AG rank is good, I'm usually in the bottom half around the 2/3 mark. Swim felt good, sighting and breathing good, I never really drafted for any length of time. 2 waves for Olympic racers, men & women. First race with the 2 piece Desoto. No issues with getting it off. Definitely easier to get on.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have gone a little harder on the swim. Since it's my weakest discipline I tend to "survive" the swim and race the bike/run. Need to get the race mentality for the swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s

2nd in AG, +2 secs behind AG winner. I was a long way from bike out.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I prefer to be closer to bike out in TA.
  • 1h 13m 6s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.40 mile/hr

My bike fitness is not where I would like it be yet due to run emphasis for Boston. My crash 2 weeks ago made me just a little more cautious than normal but I'm pretty much back to normal, maybe 10% away from normal. I am better on a less technical course. The turns and neighborhood stretch had an effect on overall time. My Garmin had the bike at 24.27 and my speed at 19.8. I may be a little off in hitting the buttons but bike course was proabably a little short. I was passed only a few times.
What would you do differently?:

Bike more, develop better biking skills
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s

AG rank 3, +10 behind AG winner again.
What would you do differently?:

Good T2
  • 44m 21s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile

Garmin had run at 6.12, pace at 7:12. I'll take this for an early season run. 2 weeks ago I had a 6:53 pace for standalone 10k, so 15-20 seconds off with my current bike fitness is acceptable. When we ran on Sat I started developing a little hot spot on left heel. I considered socks but passed. Left heel has a spot about nickle sized rubbed raw. I also had a couple of blood blisters on the top of my right toes. My left heel was sliding around quite a bit early. I stopped 2x and tried to adjust shoes but it made no difference. I don't think socks would have made much difference. It should heal up by Buffalo.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of fluids in and on body.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike fitness is behind, run fitness is ahead so it's kind of a wash. Both my Olys last year were under 2:30 so a little disappointed in my overall time. Individual splits ranks good, very consistent even with my "poor" swim.

Overall pleased with 1st tri of the year. I missed 3rd by 29 secs but I did have a 5:01 transition advantage on the 3rd place finisher. Too bad he wasn't a little bit slower. A great example of how transitions are extremely important.

Event comments:

Great time traveling, preparing with our TriRochester group. The elder Carey's hospitality was beyond expectations. Great to have Mark Carey win a hometown race. We also had Andy and Sawra win their AG. Diana and Harvey were 2nd. We had an awesome club showing. I'll strongly consider coming back next year.

A few more porta-potties would have been good.

Course: 2 loop course. We drove the course on Sat so had some idea what to expect. Course was more technical than most I race, a neighborhood section with sharp turns, a roundabout, etc. Smooth roads for most part. Fun course but it did favor those with better bike skills which I am still developing.
