Buffalo Triathlon
50F / 10C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 28m 53s
Overall Rank = 89/372
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 14/39
Pre-race routine:

Up at 0400 ate a bowl of cereal, drank a protien/carb shake and a Cliff bar. Left for the site at 0445. Got to the race site @ 0600. Staged my bike and gear at the rack and did packet pickup and body marking.
Event warmup:

Did a brief warm-up ride and then 20 minute jog.
Swim
  • 25m 3s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt pretty good. I was able to pass a good number of the people from the wave ahead of me. Felt like I was getting stuck in a lot of traffic whenever approaching a buoy marker. Seems like people bunch up at them and then fan back out after passing. After bumping with people multiple times and getting stuck behind groups I swam out wider and away where there was less traffic.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder and faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Took the time to put on a long sleeve shirt and coat to stay warm on the ride.
What would you do differently?:

If warm enough, just take off on the bike without putting on extra gear.
Bike
  • 1h 19m 31s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was about what I expected in terms of my mph. I definitely must hit the bike training much harder as this was clearly my weakest portion of the race
What would you do differently?:

Increase bike training. Eventually get a TT/Tri bike and some raceing wheels.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Had some issues with getting the lacing right on the right shoe. Could have done a better job getting shoes on and getting out from the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Work on a better lace setup for my shoes.
Run
  • 40m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't run as fast as I had hoped, but at least was able to keep the pace under 6:30. Legs were mostly numb through mile 3 then the burn set in and lung capacity was decreasing from that point forward.

So you were one of those guys who zoomed right by me on the run!  Maybe your run wasn't quite where you wanted it to be, but that's pretty darn fast as far as I'm concerned.  Good job on your race.

Thanks! Ha... I can't say that I noticed anyone really tall on the run, but I wasn't really looking either Yeah, overall I'm pleased with the event. It was my first tri and was really meant as a rehearsal for Racine in July...
