Pre-race routine:

drove to the race and waited in the bathroom line for an hour.
there was only 1 toilet each for the women and then men. it was ridiculous. luckily, it was really nice out and the event started :30 minutes late, so it didn't matter, but it was really annoying.

then we picked up our packets and waited for the start down by the water.
Event warmup:

swam about 10 yards to check the water and my goggles.

Comments:

i wasn't feeling very motivated on the way to there, but we rarely get the chance for open water swims. i figured i would just get out there and see what happened.

i was all over the place at the start, but my arms were feeling great and the adrenaline kicked in so i started pushing it. i couldn't find any decent drafting, so i just put my head down and swam. the first lap felt like forever and my left goggle had some salt water in it that stung every time i took a breath. i cleared it towards the end of the first lap though and immediately felt better. not sure why i waited so long. then when i hit the beach i saw i was under :30 minutes and still felt good. i never expected to break 1 hour, but it was worth a shot.

the second lap was pretty uneventful. i didn't swim all out, but i swam pretty hard. i checked my watch with ~3 minutes left and realized i probably wasn't going to make it but i still decided to try. i swam hard all the way to the finish and got pretty close. very happy with the swiim. im distance pr by 6+ minutes!
What would you do differently?:

clear goggles earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

cheered on other swimmers and then stopped at the bakery and got on the road. it's fun to get hardware at races, but on the other hand not waiting around for awards is nice. :-)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing
