So lets get this started, its a long race, so those doing it should know now if they are in.

Who is in.
who has done this before?
Time or race goals?

I'll get this going.

this will be my 2nd attempt at this race, last year was a DNF.

Looking to PR and hopefully hit something in the 4:30s if my training and weather work out in myh favor:-)

Just curious to know what happened last year that caused the DNF?

I'll be there for the Sprint/ Olympic race, not sure which one yet, see how July goes.

mix of a few things, i had a lingering ITB injury and the 50-70mph winds had me riding off the side of my seat, sadly the wrong side of the saddle for the hurt leg, and it got PISSED off, about 2 miles into the run i could not bend it, and bagged the day.

i had tried to train through it too much, and then missed a bunch of training.

mainly stupidity on my part:-)

Ok, I talked with the RD this past race at deer creek and he told the story of the winds and how the porta potties were all in the lake.

Hope everything lines up for you this year.  How's colorado going?

going well so far, training is getting back on track after rockman, recovering from a half, getting used to altitude and an 18 hour drive all together make for a rough week;-)

I will be there. Second year for the half. Due to the flat course I hoped to kill it last year, but the weather gods said otherwise. I am also looking to hit the 4:30's to 4:40's newbz. It's a little later in September this year so I am praying for some cool temperatures. It will probably be 90 degrees again though. Bring it! Anyways, the double out and back for the run, especially at Deer Creek, is torture on the mind. Loooong stretches of open country road make it seem longer than it really is. The three loops on the bike are also a pain. I love this race.

I'm in.  It'll be my first half.  I'm just a few minutes in front of making the cut-off time for the swim at least, so I have a long way to go.  I should be OK on the bike and run.

Cut-Off Times

The official race finish is at 4:30pm. The cut-off for the swim is 1 hour and 15 minutes after the start of the last wave. Any participant still in the water at this time will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue with the race.

The cut-off for the bike is 1:30pm. Any participant still on the bike at this time will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue with the race.

The cut-off for the run is 5:00pm.

i was thinking more about my time goals - i still am shooting for under 5 hours but that would mean EVERYTHING goes just right - the swim should be 37-40 minutes, t1 1- 2 min, bike 2:40-2:45, t2 1-2 min, run 1:40-1:45 = 4:59 -  5:14

so my A goal is 4:59
 my B goal is 5:14
my C goal is Finish

I am in.  Was a toss up between this one and the Great Buckeye Challenge.  The selling point is that it is in September and hopefully the weather will be good.  Did the sprint there a couple weeks ago and I like the course.  Looks like you can fly on the bike (without the high winds).  Will be interesting to see.  Hope to go under 5:15.

i figure it is almost 2 hours longer than running a marathon so that is my closest guide.

night before i will eat a moderate dinner and hydrate well.  i will have a full breakfast 2 hours before (big bowl of total cereal with skim milk, 8 oz OJ, 8 oz coffee)  have prob 500 calories of power bar clif bar type stuff over teh next hour and a half while sipping 16 oz of sports drink. 5-10 minutes prior to start have a gu and a couple oz water.
on the bike i'll tape a gu to the frame i am carrying 20 oz og gatorade in an aero battle and i may have another bottle on the frame- what do think?  2nd bottle needed?  i use about 16 oz in a marathon.  i use none in a short sprint tri.  in a long sprint i used 8 oz.
during the half marathon i will use my half marathon routing

My plan right now (and what worked well at rockman/in training) is:

morning of eat something light, toast, bagel, etc.

Gu 10-15 min before the start.

Bike:
6 gels -tapped to the aerobar/stem to get them out of the way, one every 25 min or so.
first bottle on the bike is heed, the rest ill pick up along the way,

run alternate between water and heed, coke near the end, one gel if needed.

approx 300 cal an hour on the bike, 150-180 per hour on the run.

bike wise i'll do a mix of orange Gu as it seems to keep my stomach happy and esspresso hammer gel for teh caffiene.

Here is what I am planning. Works for long training and TTT.

Breakfast of mix protein and carbs 2 hrs before race. Usually waffle with peanut butter. 1/2 bottle of Infinite in the 2 hrs before race (sipping),  3 full bottle of infinite IM formula w/ caffeine and 2 just water on the bike (approx 200-300 cals on bike), then I switch to Infinite heat formula on the run...no protein on the run.  Then chock milk/soy milk after. I have been using Infinite for about 2.5 yrs and have no stomach issues and no dehydration issues. I love Infinte and it works well for me so I don't mess with it...I have enough stuff to work on

they'll have bottles to distribute during the race?????

oh and i'll leave some kinda nourishment at trans in case i want it.

thinking about calorie need i may put something more substantial inm the water bottle and maybe tape on a couple more gu packs

sean, i had no idea that was you!

i had an ugly ugly day last year, dropped on bottle (had no idea i lost it), and then with the extra time out there totally ran out!
thanks!!!!

Brue, yeah you will prob want a bit more than for the marathon. think about it like this, you have to run those 13 mi AFTER 3 hours of racing, basically a full marathons worth of time, then you have to do that run.

i will plan for lots of fluids and fuel on the bike and then drink a little at aid stations on the run at 3 mile intervals.

another thread made me think about the sunscreen - i need someone to lather up be back pre race - any takers?

and clothing - right now I am thinking my same tri shorts for all three events.  the only clothing change will be to add a shirt if the sun is too intense and i will run with performance training shoes w/ strings and feetures socks rather than sockless in my racing flats w/ yanks.

I'm in, too.
This is my first 1/2Iron distance.
I'm excited!

The corn will be up in Sept., which makes that one stretch of road a windless tunnel of bliss!
I am ready for those two hills, also. I've worked on that course a lot, and I am ready!

last year the corn was all down there before the sept 15th race, and it was a windy hell.

plan on wind, its open and will pick up by the time we are out on the bike.

Well, yes, I am certainly hoping there will not be a hurricane again.
I am guessing that is a once per decade (or less) experience in Ohio!

my guess is just with the later start for the half and the flat areas by the time we hit the bike there will be some wind.
