Subject: Time to replace bike tire?
Basic question about when to replace a bike tire.  I'm on my first non-mountain bike, and first set of tires.

The rear tire has light-ish wear, but a narrow 1/8 inch gash on the top of the tire.  I've ridden them about 500 miles, give or take.  Time to replace, or is this normal wear and tear that these kinds of tires can roll with?  I assume the former, but don't really have experience with this and don't want to throw away good gear.

Thanks in advance.

Got a picture?  Does the cut go through?

FWIW, I've got >2600 miles on a pair of Continental Gatorskins and they are fine.  Got a sidewall puncture on the front a couple weeks after installing them and it's been booted ever since.  *knock knock*

I suppose that would help, wouldn't it?  I don't think it goes through.  I'll see if I can figure out how to post a pic.

If the cut is just in the rubber tread and doesn't go through to the threads in the tire casing, I'd probably keep riding it.

I usually replace tires once a year which is 4500 miles or so. 500 only needs replacing if tire is damaged.

You may have to dismount the tire to see if it goes through the casing.  I've had tires that have a slight split that pick up little rocks that eventually wear through the casing.  I probably wouldn't replace the tire you have.

If it is just on the tread I wouldn't replace it. I had a tire like that that i got well over 1000 miles before it ripped through.
