Total Time = 2h 39m 12s
Overall Rank = 60/192
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 13/30
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 0500 and had a bagel and honey and coffee. Arrived at race site shorty after 0700, got my transition set up and body markings/timing chip done. Watched the swim of the HM race which started at 0800. Ate a Cliff bar at 08:15.
Event warmup:

At 0855 I got in the water and warmed up for 7 or 8 minutes.
Swim
  • 33m 48s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 15s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started mid pack on shore. Waded in and started swimming. It was very crowded on the first leg and the first turn. Ended up stopping a couple of times for traffic to clear. After the shore run in between laps when I got back into the water I felt kind of weird, disoriented or almost dizzy. Fortunately that didn't last long. The second lap was much better as it had thinned out. My second lap time was faster than the first.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of the crowd earlier.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Wetsuit strippers on the beach! Was very quick. Short run (100m?) up to T-area. Powered up Garmin first, then put on socks, shoes, HRM, shirt, race bib, sunglasses and helmet. Seemed to go fairly quickly and I had no problems. No T-time was captured by race timing.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 19s
  • 40 kms
  • 32.29 km/hr
Comments:

Bike leg was great. Passed lots of people especially on the hills. I kept worrying I was pushing too hard but my HR was good and I felt good.

The bike split includes both transitions and the run up from the beach. My Garmin says my bike split was 1:09:26
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Un-clipped before dismount zone. Off bike no problem. legs felt stable. Short jaunt to my rack spot. Racked bike, removed helmet and shoes, switched Garmin to wrist, pulled on shoes and was off. Again, the time was not captured.
Run
  • 51m 6s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 07s  min/km
Comments:

Felt much better than I thought I would at the start of the run. The T-runs in training hurt much more (but they are after 3+ hrs on the bike) My goal was to run at my HM pace of 5:00/km but I ended up walking the three water stations and that was enough to add a minute to my time.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder the last 2k.

Event comments:

First year running the Oly along with the Long Course. A few logistical issues but nothing major.
