Dextro Energy/ Washington Sports & Event Management
75F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 29m 39s
Overall Rank = 266/477
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 44/63
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:45 AM, in the car by 4:15. Followed Hammer's recommendations to do 4 scoops of SE in a bottle of water for breakfast then switch to water.
Event warmup:

3/4 mile walk to transition from parking
Swim
  • 20m 24s
  • 750 yards
  • 02m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Excellent sighting on the upstream leg, then was all over the place on the downstream leg. Hit buoy #3 way too close and got tangled up in it. When will I learn to stay away from the buoys?

Also did not have particularly good technique in terms of body position and good, complete roll. But I did do the whole thing freestyle without a break!
What would you do differently?:

-improve navigation
-work on drafting
-don't let race excitement kill technique
Transition 1
  • 02m 41s
Bike
  • 35m 18s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 21.13 mile/hr
Comments:

Slowed down way too much due to unfamiliarity with the course and a couple riders in my way. This course is not rideable normally so not much to do about either thing...
What would you do differently?:

-take turns a bit faster
-if I see a slower group before a turn, I need to kick it in and pass them so I have the corner to myself.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

No really big problems, just need to keep practicing.
Run
  • 29m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Just need to keep the bricks coming and do more LT work. Had decent rhythm but never could get moving as fast as I felt like I could go.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder!
Post race
Warm down:

Finish was 1.5mi from transition, so used that to get a good walk in. It was nice, actually, to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

-Swim technique. I don't think it was really a fitness issue, but I do need to improve speed and believe that I can go faster and not be cooked.

-Slowish run--more speed work and LT runs!

Event comments:

I only give it 4 stars because, while the event was extremely well-run and the venue was awesome, it's a very logistics-heavy race. Expect a few hours for pre-race activities the day before and expect to arrive WAY early to get to transition on race day. Otherwise, definitely worthwhile, and I'll be back next year if I can make it!

Excellent race!

Does anyone know if the results for the age group racers are posted anywhere yet?

Thank you in advance!
